  • Brunswick County Literacy Council sets 18th annual golf tournament at Carolina National

    The Brunswick County Literacy Council is preparing for its 18th annual golf tournament on June 21. The tournament again will be at the Carolina National Golf Club, at Winding River in Bolivia.

    The tournament is the council’s most successful fundraising event. Last year, the council aided GED students through Generation NEXT. It also began Make Mine a Diploma, which is a dropout prevention program in partnership with Brunswick County schools and BCLC Baby Steps. BCLC gave 2,708 hours of volunteer service to 1,450 residents.

    OCEAN RIDGE COUPLES

    Ocean Ridge Couples played a two-best-nets match (one from the men and one from the ladies) on May 25 on Panther’s Run.

    The winning team was Bob and Grace Bradicich and Walter and Carole Milnichuk (blind draw) at -23.

    In second were Walter and Carole Milnichuk and Tom and Marie Best at -18 (match of cards). In third were Frank and Dusty Burianek and Don and Peggy Rowland at -18. In fourth were George James and Ann Turner and Lynn and Bev Furman at -16 (match of cards). In fifth were Bob and Jane Kirkpatrick and Howard and Ruth Ray at -16.

  • Special banquet celebrates softball season

    Dining on steak and shrimp at home plate, the West Brunswick High School softball team celebrated its 19-victory season May 29, a season coach Joe Noble said was special because of team unity. He gave them plaques with the inscription: Thanks for the teamwork, spirit and unity.

    “This was by far the best team the we’ve had as far as unity and playing together and playing as one,” he said.

  • Southwest Trojans boast winning record

    The Southwest Trojans baseball team improved to 6-1 after beating Socastee 24-13 and 5-3 in a doubleheader Saturday.

    In the first game against Socastee, the Trojans led 12-0 entering the bottom of the third before Socastee rallied to tie the score 12-12. But the Trojans outscored Socastee 12-1 in the next two innings to win the game.

  • Post 68 wins three games

    The Brunswick County Post 68 American Legion baseball team won three games last week and improved to 4-0.

    On Friday, Post 68 beat Wallace 14-4.

    Josh Powell was 3-for-4 with three doubles and three RBIs. Pat Kamfolt was 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Elliot Swain, Wally Kamfolt and Ryan Morgan were 1-for-3. Forrest Stead was 1-for-2. Mikhail Wheeler was 1-for-4.

    Ethan Cox was the winning pitcher. He pitched four innings and gave up two runs, one earned. He gave up five hits and four walks. He struck out seven.

    Post 68 swept Whiteville 8-5 and 6-5 on Saturday.

  • Clear, Sergent WBHS Athletes of Year

    Jordan Clear and Josh Sergent are the West Brunswick High School athletes of the year.

    Marcia Heady, the WBHS athletic director, presented the Female Athlete of the Year plaque to Clear and the Male Athlete of the Year plaque to Sergent during the Senior Awards Program May 28 at the school.

    In volleyball last season, Clear was honorable mention on the Mideastern All-Conference volleyball team. She was voted the Trojans’ best defensive player. She led the volleyball team in aces (43) digs (276). She made the all-county volleyball team.

  • Trojans' Young to play soccer in State Games

    West Brunswick rising senior Monica Young has been selected to play in the State Games of North Carolina Junior/Senior Soccer Showcase. She will play for the East team, and one of her coaches will be Tripp Smith, the coach of the West Brunswick boys’ team.

    The showcase will take place June 21-22 at UNC Greensboro.

    The games are an elite-level, Olympic-style event for rising high school juniors and seniors. Players represent one of four regions and play two games with some of the best soccer talent in the state.

  • West Brunswick baseball team celebrates championship season

    The West Brunswick High School baseball team celebrated its conference championship during its awards banquet May 29 in the school cafeteria.

    Coach Mike Alderson, the Mideastern Conference Coach of the Year, noted the Trojan baseball team was the first WBHS team to win a conference title since WBHS has been in the conference. The Trojans finished 9-3 in the conference and 20-7 overall.

    What was more important, he said, was the team had a grade-point average of 3.0.

    Four Trojans were recognized for making first team all-conference.

  • West Brunswick High School students perform 'Footloose'

    West Brunswick High School students kicked off their Sunday shoes last weekend when they performed the musical “Footloose.”

    A cast of 40 students and 14 members of the show choir rehearsed since March for the show. Kate Flynn, Leslie Jackson and Allie Marshall helped backstage and behind the scenes.

    Amanda Penegar, theater arts director, said she has always loved the movie version, and the students couldn’t have agreed more.

  • 18-year-old found guilty, sentenced for 2006 home invasion

    BOLIVIA—A jury found 18-year-old Darren Deanthony Marlow guilty Friday in connection with the December 2006 home invasion of an elderly Hickmans Crossroads woman.

    The former West Brunswick High School athlete was sentenced to 42 to 60 months in state prison by Superior Court Judge Tom Lock after a 12-member jury found Marlow guilty of first-degree burglary, conspiracy to commit first-degree burglary, and felony larceny.
