  • Experience plays key part in legion games

    Experience is everything in sports, and that is one of the benefits of the American Legion baseball season.

    West Brunswick ballplayers will be represented in two American Legion leagues this summer.

    The Southwest Brunswick team, which is mainly junior varsity and younger varsity players from the West Brunswick Trojans, will compete as an independent junior legion team. West Brunswick High School coach Mike Alderson will manage the team. It will play its games at West Brunswick.

  • West Brunswick's junior league blasts Ashley in opener

    WILMINGTON—West Brunswick’s junior American Legion baseball team (Southwest Brunswick) opened its season by routing Ashley 19-8 May 22.

    West Brunswick trailed 3-2 after the first inning but scored four runs in the second and six runs in the third en route to the victory.

    West Brunswick finished with 18 hits. Jay Gause was 4-for-5 with seven RBIs and two doubles. Both doubles were hit with the bases loaded.

    “There was no place to put him, so they had to pitch to him,” manager Mike Alderson said. “Of course, everybody hit.”

  • Post 68 opens season 8-7 with victory

    JACKSONVILLE—The Brunswick County Post 68 American Legion baseball team opened its season by beating Jacksonville 8-7 in 10 innings on Friday.

    Post 68 led 5-3 entering the bottom of the eighth inning but Jacksonville scored four runs to take a 7-5 lead. Post 68 tied the score by scoring twice in the top of the ninth.

    “The kids showed up to play baseball,” Post 68 manager Randy Fennell said. “We got down in the bottom of the eighth but scored twice in the ninth to tie the game. They didn’t give up.”

  • Warmer water means more pompano putting myths to rest

    As the water warms, more and more pompano are being caught. Contrary to fishing lore, not every one of them is brought in on a gold hook, and not every bait used is a sand flea full of orange roe. If you happen to have a gold hook and a sand flea full of orange roe, then go for it. But even if you don’t, you still stand a good chance of catching some pompano from now until things get too cold for them in late fall.

  • Weather and fish finally cooperate

    Like Hannibal of “The A-Team” TV show used to say, “I love it when a plan comes together.”

    Despite Saturday being a bit dreary, the weather and the fish got their acts together on Sunday and Monday and made for a Chamber of Commerce type holiday weekend. Here at the Ocean Isle Fishing Center it was very nice to see so many people visiting and getting on the water. The beaches were packed, the waterway looked like an interstate highway and offshore the calm seas made for great fishing conditions.

    HOLES-IN-ONE

    Making a hole-in-one is a difficult feat, but six area residents did just that recently.

    Terry G. Draper of Carolina Shores made a hole-in-one May 30 at Sandpiper Bay Golf and Country Club.

    Draper used a 3-hybrid at the 164-yard third hole. The hole-in-one was witnessed by Joseph Mosser.

    Loretta DeVita of Sunset Beach made a hole-in-one April 8 at Sea Trail Resort. DeVita used a pitching wedge at the 60-yard fifth hole. The hole-in-one was witnessed by James Mitchum.

    Girls Golf is part of The First Tee of Brunswick County. All spring, 15 young ladies have been meeting weekly at St. James Plantation to learn about life skills and golf.

  • Four county players to play in state games

    The N.C. State Games showcase the best amateur athletic talent in the state, and this year that will include three baseball players from West Brunswick High School.

    Trojan catcher Josh Powell and infielders Wally and Pat Kamfolt will play for the Region 2 team.

    “You can only have three (rising senior) players from one high school on that team,” West Brunswick High School coach Mike Alderson said.

    North Brunswick catcher Dakota Irwin also is on the team.

  • Sheriff Ingram names Miller chief deputy

    A new face was among the crowd of sheriff’s deputies sworn in Friday morning by District Judge Marion Warren.

    After taking his oath of office, Brunswick County Sheriff John Ingram had a meeting with his staff to announce the new chief deputy, Charlie Miller.

    Miller, who has been serving on the Brunswick County Board of Education since being elected in 2006, previously worked for the sheriff’s office before running his own business.

    “This is my full-time job now,” he said Friday, his first day on the job.
