  • UPDATE Shallotte residents view preliminary vision plan

    SHALLOTTE—A pedestrian-friendly downtown with attractive signs, tree-lined streets and riverfront development including a public riverwalk could be in the town’s future if the vision plan presented Thursday night becomes a reality.

    About 30 residents and town officials gathered at Shallotte Middle School to get a glimpse of consultant Allison Platt’s preliminary 10-year vision plan for the town, complete with drawings of an expanded waterfront area off Cheers Street, new streets, a riverwalk and a mix of commercial and residential development.

  • Sloan files grievance with state Democratic Party

    Willie Sloan, who had the second-highest number of votes for the sheriff’s nomination last Saturday, has filed a grievance with the state Democratic Party.

    John Ingram was named the nominee after defeating Sloan by 13.5 votes.

    Sloan filed a grievance with the state Democratic Party Friday, saying the Brunswick County Democratic Party Executive Committee violated state party rules.

    N.C. Democratic Party Chairman Jerry Meek said Sloan alleges four of the people who voted in Saturday’s election also serve as elections officials at polling locations.

  • UPDATEFour suspects charged with area break-in

    Four suspects were arrested Thursday, charged with the early-morning break-in at the Provision Co. restaurant near Holden Beach.

    According to a sheriff’s office press release, an employee noticed a broken window, damaged items and a stolen flat-screen TV when the employee went to work and reported the break-in.

    Sheriff’s deputies conducting surveillance in the area noticed the suspects loading the TV in the back of the car.

  • A silver anniversary not to be missed

    Believe it or not, it’s been 25 years since the Brunswick Little Theatre first staged a play in Brunswick County, and the community theater has been going strong ever since.

    Our county is lucky to have a talented “theater rat” like Stuart Callari, who got the group off the ground in 1983, directing “Brigadoon” at Hatch Auditorium.

    The Southport native and theater major was definitely in her element, directing all the group’s plays while it was still known as “The Brunswick Players” and performing at Hatch.

    Kefalas graduates

    Ashleigh Kefalas, daughter of John and Carolyn Kefalas of Ash, was one of 170 members of the class of 2008 at St. Andrews Presbyterian College.

    Kefalas received a bachelor of arts in biology with a specialized program of study in equine science during commencement exercises on May 3 on the college campus in Laurinburg.

    St. Andrews Presbyterian College is a four-year liberal arts and sciences college situated on 600 acres around a 70-acre lake in the Sandhills region of North Carolina.

  • BCC honors outstanding students

    Brunswick Community College celebrated outstanding student accomplishments at its annual Celebration of Champions on Friday, May 2.

    The recognition program acknowledges the hard work of more than 100 students in various academic programs.

    BCC President Dr. Stephen Greiner began the program by welcoming everyone and recognizing the faculty for helping the students succeed.

    Sharon Thompson, vice president for academic services, introduced each department and the lead instructor of each department spoke about their nominated students.
