  • Planning board recommends approval of Wisteria Place master plan

    SHALLOTTE—The town planning board has recommended approving a master plan for a new, 89-unit development on Village Point Road. It also recommended denial of a rezoning request on the same road that would change the area from residential to multi-family, saying it goes against the town’s land-use plan.

    At Tuesday night’s meeting, the planning board heard an overview of the master plan for “Wisteria Place” from the developers and planners of the project.

  • Academy receives conditional use permit; board questions Walgreens

    SHALLOTTE—Town aldermen have approved a conditional use allowing The Academy of Coastal Carolina to continue to operate in Calvary Baptist Church.

    One of the administrators of the private Christian school, Terry Cox, came before the board at its meeting last Wednesday.

  • Sunset Beach gets ready to budget for upcoming fiscal year

    SUNSET BEACH—Read town administrator Gary Parker’s lips: no new tax increase is being projected for the town’s upcoming 2008-2009 fiscal year budget.

    The tax rate for the town’s proposed $5,785,436 fiscal 2008-2009 budget, in fact, is 9.5 cents per $100 of valuation, compared to the current 11.5 cents.

    That amount is expected to cover all of the town’s projected operating and maintenance expenses and capital expenditures while returning $200,000 to its fund balance.

  • It's refreshing to see Brunswick through newcomers' eyes

    I love the people and places of Brunswick County. As a relative newcomer myself, I’m just now getting the chance to give tours to family and friends around this place I call home.

    With great weather officially here and the ocean waters warmed up, I have a list of people who are salivating at the chance to come down and visit. I’d like to think the lure of my company is what brings them here, but in reality, I understand the chance for a getaway to warm weather, sandy beaches and the ocean probably beckons a bit more than my inability to cook.

    The girls wore white dresses under their Carolina blue gowns and gathered at the old well.

    They posed for photographs wearing mortarboards and offered each other congratulatory hugs, their families looking on.

    The young men stood near one of the residence halls. They wore dress shirts, slack and ties, and carried their gowns on racks over their shoulders. Their families followed behind.

    Two girls stood in the rose garden near the sundial. Mirror images of one another they stood in the light blue cap and gown with blonde hair blowing in the wind.

  • Williams birth

    Allen and Lesley Williams of Holden Beach are the parents of a daughter, Ava Marie Williams, born at 9:48 a.m. April 10 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

    She weighed 7 pounds, 13 ounces and measured 20 inches long.

    She joins a sister, Aley, 17 months.

    Maternal grandparents are Lyn and Judy Holden of Holden Beach.

    Paternal grandparents are Fred and Eliza Williams of St. Pauls.

    Great-grandfather is Frederick Williams of Rex.

  • Libero-Hickman

    Announcement is made of the forthcoming marriage of Laura Antonio Libero of Salemburg and William Richard Hickman of Ocean Isle Beach. The bride-elect is the daughter of Angelo and Roberta Libero of Salemburg. The prospective groom is the son of Yogi and Gail Hickman of Ocean Isle Beach. A June 28 wedding is planned at New Beginnings Community Church.
