    ‘Coffee House Cabaret‘ at Sharon

    The Senior Choir of Sharon United Methodist Church is sponsoring a Coffee House Cabaret at 6:30 p.m. Friday, May 16, at the church, 2030 Holden Beach Road.

    Coffee and dessert will be served followed by an evening of entertainment, including jazz, country and western and golden oldie music.

    The public is invited to this free event. Donations received will go toward the church building fund.

  • Busch's Darlington win greeted by boos from the crowd

    DARLINGTON, S.C.— Although he and “The Track Too Tough To Tame” exchanged blows, Kyle Busch and his No. 18 M&Ms Indiana Jones Toyota triumphed Saturday night, winning the Dodge Challenger 500 before a sellout crowd at historic Darlington Raceway.

    As the Victory Lane interview was broadcast over the public-address system, a chorus of boos rained down from the grandstands at Darlington Raceway.

    “These guys love it. They love the noise the fans make,” Busch said in retort. “So keep it up, everybody.”

  • BCC's inaugural baseball season comes to a close

    STAFF REPORT

    Brunswick Community College’s inaugural season of intercollegiate baseball came to an end last weekend as the Dolphins lost yet another one-run game, to Southeastern, and then fell to conference champion Lenoir Community College in the Region 10 Tournament at Mount Olive College.

    SOUTHEASTERN CC 12

    BRUNSWICK CC 11

    Brunswick Community College had the tying run in scoring position in the ninth inning but was unable to bring the runner home. Southeastern slipped past BCC 12-11.

  • There's no tough decision here

    When I was covering county government, I must have heard David Sandifer say this 50 times:

    “You can recreate, or you can incarcerate.”

    His point was young people who play recreational sports are far less likely to end up in prison.

    That’s why a few years ago the Brunswick County Commissioners approved building new sports and recreational parks in the Ocean Isle and Holden Beach areas.

  • From suits to shades, Swofford de-stresses at Ocean Isle Beach

    The beach was a late discovery for this man who grew up in the shadow of the mountains.

    Now Ocean Isle Beach is his retreat, his refuse, his revival.

    John Swofford comes to Brunswick County to slip the bonds and pressures of being Atlantic Coast Conference commissioner and Bowl Championship Series (BCS) coordinator.

    “You come over that bridge and see the island and the ocean out in front of you, and it’s like you’re entering another world,” Swofford said.

    The 20th annual Brunswick County Gator Senior Games had competitions last week in track and field events, bowling, golf, tennis, swimming and cycling. Winners were:

    Cycling (1 mile): Women 55-59, Janice Ammann 3:39.84. Men 75-79, John Beddow 4:43.50.

    Cycling (5K): Women 55-59, Ammann, 10:59.62. Men 75-79, Beddow 15:14.65.

    Cycling (10K): Women 55-59, Ammann 21:18.00. Men 75-79, Beddow 30:28.00.

  • Flounder tournament set for June 13-14

    Brunswick County celebrates a quarter of a century of inshore flounder-tournament fishing when the 25th annual flounder tournament takes place June 13-14.

    The tournament, based out of the Shallotte Point Volunteer Fire Department and with weigh-in at Tripp’s Fishing Center, will have $6,000 in cash and prizes.

    The tournament is sponsored by the Sudan Daredevils of the South Brunswick Islands Shrine Club.

    Entry fee is $75 per boat and includes two free dinner tickets. Entry fee is $25.

    Beachcombers

    The Beachcombers played at Brierwood May 9.

    Paul Michal shot 81 to win low gross. Gary Guthiel was second with 83. Stu Cleveland was third with 84. Randy Cogdill was fourth with 86. Jim Beairsto was fifth with 89.

    Ed Kinney won low net with 66. Paul Michal and Randy Cogdill tied for second with 67. Stu Cleveland was next with 69.

    Gary Guthiel, Paul Michal and Ed Kinney teamed to win the team low net with -17.

    Calabash Elks

    Ron Mayo won the Calabash Elks tournament May 10 at Brierwood with a net 64. Fred Walsh finished second with 68.

  • Crow Creek golf tournament honoring Jerry McLamb is a labor of love

    Jerry McLamb is gone now, passed away from cancer five years ago, but his spirit lives on at Crow Creek.

    His spirit is there in the friendly greeting you get from the bag attendant when you arrive, in the smile of the cart girl as she hands you a PowerAde on the 13th hole.

    It’s there in the welcoming hand of Bryan Thomas, the general manager.
