  • Ocean Ridge Plantation golfers step up to the First Tee

    Five Ocean Ridge golfers show up at Cinghiale Creek, the home course of The First Tee, every Tuesday afternoon. From 4-5:30 p.m., they teach golf and life skills to 15 junior golfers.

    The juniors hit balls and play the course. They also sit down in the classroom and talk about life skills. They learn “meet and greet,” the age old ritual of shaking hands, so important to job, relationships, and sports.

    They learn by doing, by trying new skills with their clubs. They learn by example from their coaches.

  • Trojans breeze by Patriots in playoff game

    SHALLOTTE—Warning: Objects in strike zone may appear bigger than they really are.

    After West Brunswick’s baseball team walloped West Carteret 10-2 in a state playoff game Friday night, Trojan coach Mike Alderson said, “It looks like a softball to them now.”

    The Trojans pounded the baseball for 10 hits, including two each by Ryan Hill, Logan Tripp and Josh Powell.

    “We’ve been coming out of the gate really fired up,” said Powell, who batted in three runs.

    His first RBI came in the first inning.

  • Four Trojans qualify for state track meet

    Four West Brunswick track athletes performed well enough at the 3A Eastern Track Regionals to qualify for the 3A State Track and Field Meet Friday at North Carolina A&T State University.

    “We are really excited for our young people who qualified for the state championship meet this Friday in Greensboro,” West Brunswick head track coach Yogi Hickman said.

    “They have worked really hard and have improved their times throughout the season, and now they have a legitimate chance for a medal at the state meet.”

  • North's Balloon wins state championship in shot put

    North Brunswick’s Joshua Balloon won the state championship in the shot put at the 2A state championship track and field meet Friday at North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro.

    The 6-foot, 220-pound senior threw 57’” to win the shot-put competition.

    “He did what all coaches hope their athletes can do—performed his best at the biggest meet of the year,” North coach Gary Bishop said.

    “Joshua beat his personal best by 3 feet.”

    Balloon also finished sixth in the state in the discus with a throw of 141 feet.

  • Lady Trojans stuggle at the plate, fall to Hoggard

    SHALLOTTE—West Brunswick’s loss to Hoggard last Thursday night wasn’t the kind of tune-up the Lady Trojans wanted.

    Instead, they hope to add new plugs in the form of hits when the state softball playoffs get under way.

    West struggled at the plate, while Hoggard pounded 13 hits on the way to a 7-3 win.

    “It wasn’t our night,” West coach Joe Noble said. “There was a lot of nerves because everybody knew it was Senior Night, and there were some college scouts in the stands.

  • Scorpion trio competes in tennis regionals

    Josh Carter, Noah Gotsch and Eric Spafford fell in the first round of the boys’ tennis regionals at Riverbirch Tennis Center in Greenville last weekend.

    Carter, who plays No. 1 for North Brunswick, qualified for regionals in singles, and Gotsch and Spafford qualified in doubles.

    “They did really well, and we’re really proud of them,” said Gary Baldwin, Scorpion athletic director.

    North Brunswick revived its boys’ tennis program this spring, and officials hope to field a girls’ tennis team next fall, Baldwin said.

    South Brunswick shut out Pasquotank 4-0 Friday in the first round of the 2A state playoffs.

    “Jacob Morehouse did a great job on the mound,” South coach Lee Shelton said. “He was throwing outs.

    “Then Ryan Waldrep came in and did what Ryan does. We got some clutch hits by Nick Spell, Edward McNeill and Elliot Swain.”

    Morehouse pitched five innings and Waldrep two. The Cougars allowed just two hits.

    South was set to play at West Bladen on May 13.

  • Minor brothers take pair of victories

    Colin Minor, of Boiling Spring Lakes, won the shot put and the discus in his first USATF/Junior Olympic Developmental Track and Field Meet at Hoggard High School.

    Colin, a sixth-grader at South Brunswick Middle School, competed in the 11-12 age division. He took first place in the discus with a personal best of 80’1”. He also won the shot put with 28’.

    Colin’s brother Ryan, a freshman at South Brunswick High School, also won the shot put and discus in his age group.

  • UPDATE Democrats nominate Ingram for sheriff

    The fourth time was a charm Saturday afternoon for John Ingram.

    The 100-plus members of the Democratic Party Executive Committee cast their votes in four different ballots before Ingram secured the necessary 89 votes to be named the party's nominee for sheriff.

    Ingram, Brunswick County Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy, beat out Willie Sloan in the fourth and final ballot 94.5 votes to 81 votes.

    Now that Ingram has been named the Democratic Party's nominee to be appointed sheriff, Brunswick County Commissioners will vote to appoint Ingram at their May 19 meeting.
