  • Emergency Cape Fear bridge repairs to close lanes until August

    The Cape Fear Memorial Bridge will undergo emergency repairs throughout the summer, causing daily lane closures and traffic delays.

    The majority of the work will be completed during the evening, when all lanes of the bridge will be closed, North Carolina Department of Transportation division engineer Allen Pope said.

    But daytime lane closures will also be needed to facilitate repairs, he added.

  • Memorial Day events scheduled over long holiday weekend

    Several area events are slated in observance of the Memorial Day holiday, including ceremonies on Sunday and Monday and events over the weekend.

    Memorial Day is in memory of those who died in service to the country and honors veterans and service members currently serving overseas.

  • Varnamtown ponders zoning for its fishing village

    VARNAMTOWN—Town leaders are pondering a proposal to adopt zoning for this Brunswick County fishing village.

    A public hearing to consider adoption of a zoning ordinance is slated for 7:30 p.m. next Thursday, May 29, at Varnamtown Town Hall on Varnamtown Road.

    Adopting zoning would be a way to help prevent anything from coming in that might be detrimental to the town, which at last count consisted of 564 residents, town clerk Luellen Norris said.

  • Some residents want county dog park

    Count beach dog-walkers among those interested in creating a “bark park” in Brunswick County.

    Tammie Sowders and Brian Hodge of Little River, S.C., playing in the surf with their dog at Sunset Beach on Monday, said a dog park closer to home is just what is needed.

    Soon, Sowders said, seasonal rules that ban dogs from the beach during the day will take effect, and she said a dog-walk park in Myrtle Beach is too far away for them to drive conveniently.

  • Future of Calabash Fire Department debated at heated board meeting Tuesday night

    CALABASH—Board members came close to relinquishing the Calabash Fire department over to Brunswick County on Tuesday night, then voted to table a letter to that effect until local town leaders can meet with county officials.

    During often heated discussion, fire department board member Carl Naecker expressed frustration that neither mayor in Calabash or Carolina Shores has met with the board.

  • Drive-by suspects arrested

    Two men have been arrested and charged with the murder of a 28-year-old Calabash man.

    Matthew Lee Baber, 25, of 7143 Channel I, Sunset Beach, and Norman Elliot Simmons, 23, of 6501 Kingtown Road, Ash, have been charged with the murder of James Allen Murdock.

    Police found Murdock in a car on Pineclair Drive near Calabash just before 10 p.m. May 8—dead from an apparent drive-by shooting.

    Although investigators believed it was a drive-by shooting, sheriff’s office Lt. Sam Davis said it was not a random shooting—Murdock was the apparent target.

  • 'Misplaced' signs may have travelers taking long way around

    CALABASH—Do you know the way to Calabash or Carolina Shores?

    If you’re an out-of-towner trying to find your way to either western Brunswick County town, maybe not.

    Officials in both towns have complained state highway department signs pointing out directions to the towns along U.S. 17 are improperly placed.

    The signs are at the intersection with N.C. 904, which is several miles from the actual roads leading to the towns farther south.

  • Crime report

    Brunswick County Sheriff’s deputies investigated the following incidents last week, which are taken directly from sheriff’s office incident reports:

    •Property damage on Lincoln Road in Leland; suspect knocked down victim’s privacy fence.

    •Breaking and entering, larceny of a gun and property damage on Funston Road in Winnabow; suspect kicked in victim’s front door, entered residence and stole a rifle and a scope.

    •Larceny on Woodthrush Lane in Shallotte; suspect removed victim’s necklace from the bedroom.

    Ocean Isle Beach Police Department made the following arrests and investigated the following incidents last week. All information is taken directly from the OIBPD’s incident/investigation reports.

    •Jackie Lee Miles, 32, of Atkinson, charged with breaking and entering to a residence, breaking and entering to a vehicle and larceny of a motor vehicle.

    •Robert Kenneth Lee, 52, of Shallotte, charged with driving while intoxicated.

    •Cindy L. Luper, 52, of Pittsboro, charged with driving while intoxicated and left of center.
