  • West Brunswick graduate among those aiding in Coast Guard rescue

    At about 3 a.m. on March 23, Easter morning, the Alaska Ranger, a fishing vessel with 47 people on board, started to take on water. As they prepared to evacuate the ship, the U.S. Coast Guard ship stationed in Alaska, was sent to help.

    Jon Smith, a 2007 West Brunswick High School graduate, was a member of the crew who helped rescue 42 people that day.

    Smith, a 19-year-old Longwood native, was involved in JROTC at WBHS for three and a half years and knew he wanted to join the military right after graduation.

  • Crews make progress on Oak Island second bridge; Davis Canal bridge to re-open soon

    It first appeared on the state’s transportation improvement program in December 1986. Now, 22 years later, the second Oak Island Bridge is not just a proposal—it’s a reality.

    The bridge, now under construction, is slated for completion in December 2009. Now the contractors are working on the bridge’s sub-structure.

  • Brunswick County's annual Relay for Life planned for this weekend

    The Brunswick County Relay for Life kicks off at 6 p.m. Friday, May 2, with the opening ceremonies and survivors’ lap around the track at West Brunswick High School.

    The annual event is the American Cancer Society’s signature fundraiser and is designed to honor cancer survivors and remember those who lost their lives to the disease. The relay is an all-night event that goes through until 1 p.m. Saturday, May 3.

    Relay teams set up tents around the track and try to keep at least one team member on the track at all times.

  • Month-long investigation yields four drug arrests

    Brunswick County drug agents arrested four suspects accused of selling cocaine in the Winnabow area.

    Between April 9 and April 23, drug agents purchased cocaine from Sylvester Durand Ballard, 26, of 17 Bell Swamp Connection, in Winnabow.

    Drug agents stopped Ballard on April 23. He had 6.5 grams of crack cocaine on him. After searching his residence, drug agents seized crack cocaine, powder cocaine, digital scales, eight marijuana seedlings growing in the residence and $1,355.

    Brunswick County Sheriff’s deputies investigated the following incidents last week, which are taken directly from sheriff’s office incident reports:

    •Property damage on N.C. 211 in Southport; suspect dented victim’s car.

    •Property damage on Butler Circle in Ash; suspect keyed victim’s car.

    •Larceny of medicine on Robinson Park Trail in Supply; suspect took medicine from victim’s mailbox.

  • Oak Island man charged with running cocaine operation from local business

    Agents with the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office Drug Enforcement Unit completed a five-month investigation with the arrest of an Oak Island man for trafficking cocaine.

  • Suspected gang member arrested in Leland

    Agents with the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office Drug Enforcement Unit arrested a man suspected in being in the Hispanic-based street gang “18th Street.”

    Jose Ascencion Ibarra, 23, of 9591 Holly Hills Drive, Leland, was charged with two counts of trafficking cocaine, one count of possession with intent to manufacture, sell and deliver cocaine, one count of manufacture cocaine and one count of possession of drug paraphernalia.

    Leland police officers investigated the following incidents and made the following arrests last week. All information is taken directly from patrol activity reports.

    •Pursuant to a traffic stop on U.S. 17, Michael Brian Picarella, 36, of 624 Alexander Court, Riegelwood, was charged with driving while impaired, driving while license revoked, open container, expired inspection and a red light violation.

  • Shallotte police report

    Shallotte police made the following arrests and investigated the following incidents last week:

    •Police arrested Anthony Turner, 27, of Deerfield Place, Winnabow, on charges of attempted breaking and entering, larceny from buildings, safe cracking and injury to real property. He was taken to the Brunswick County Detention Center on a $15,000 secured bond.

  • Man gets life for killing his cousin

    A 19-year old Supply man has been found guilty of the 2006 murder of his cousin. He now faces life in prison.

    Superior Court Judge Thomas Lock sentenced Gregory Demontrey Simmons to life in prison after a jury found Simmons guilty of first-degree murder.

    In May 2006, Simmons was charged with the first-degree murder of his cousin, 23-year-old Alfred Louis Scott, also of Supply.

    According to assistant district attorney Brooke Leland, Scott was shot four times with a .357 Smith and Wesson revolver. Scott was pronounced dead in his backyard.
