  • Health department honored with award

    The ADA Diabetes Education Umbrella Team was honored with the Outstanding County Program Award.

    Ed Wooters, members services director of the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners, noted the educational umbrella was Don Yousey’s idea and had just completed being piloted with five counties (including Brunswick) and should receive accreditation by the ADA in the next two months.

    Rep. discusses communication service issues

    U.S. Rep. Mike McIntyre recently welcomed representatives from Star Telephone and Atlantic Telephone to discuss issues affecting communications service for consumers in Southeastern North Carolina, according to a news release.

    McIntyre and the telecommunication representatives explored the challenges small communications providers face in bringing affordable communications technologies to the rural communities in the 7th Congressional district.

  • Health Department announces restaurant inspection grades

    Environmental health specialists with the Brunswick County Health Department inspected and graded local restaurants and other food establishments during the past month.

    Grades are based on a perfect score of 100, with points taken away for infractions of state health standards. A score of 90 or better represents an A; 80-89, B; 70-79, C. Establishments with a score below C would not be allowed to operate. Establishments which have two scores during the same inspection period have been regraded at the management’s request.

  • 'The Silver Review'

    Brunswick Little Theatre will present “The Silver Review,” an evening under the stars listening to a compilation of 25 years of songs from musicals performed by BLT, from 1983’s Brigadoon though its last musical, Godspell, in November 2007.

    Performances begin at 8 p.m. May 16-18 at the Holden Beach Pavilion, at the foot of the bridge, and May 23-25 at Franklin Square Park in Southport.

    Admission is free. If there is inclement weather after 5 p.m., the show will be canceled for that night.

    Demaris and Charlotte Lance are the parents of a son, Gavin Montrel Lance, born at 5:31 p.m. March 26 at Brunswick Community Hospital.

    He weighed 7 pounds, 14 ounces and measured 21 inches long.

    He joins a brother, Jayden, 6.

    Maternal grandparents are Mary Nunn of Southport and Janes and Lori Nunn of Bland, Va.

    Paternal grandparents are Vermethia Lance of Shallotte and Handy Lance of Calabash.

    Great-grandparents are Gladys Nunn of Princeton, W. Va., Dorthy Clarida of Shallotte and James and Catherine Lance of Calabash.

    Wednesday, April 16

    Judge Marion R. Warren presided over the following cases with prosecutor Cathi Radford and courtroom clerk Michelle Warth:

    Marybob W. Anderson, operate vehicle no insurance, Brunswick County Jail three days active with three days credit for time served.

    Jesse Lloyd Arrendale, speeding 44 in a 35 zone, $25 and costs; expired/no inspection sticker, voluntarily dismissed.

    James Francis Barnes, improper equipment, costs.
