  • Diving among draws at Hard Rock Park

    It’s not often we get to see people dive in person, so it was a treat to watch the divers in the Malibu Beach Party at Hard Rock Park Saturday.

    Although they didn’t match Olympic gold-medalist Greg Louganis, the young men in the show did a variety of pikes, tucks and twists that were entertaining to watch. Often diving two at a time, the guys had to hit small landing spots in the anti-Olympic-sized pool.

    Then they rushed back up the ladders and dived again and again. Anybody would have to be in great shape to do this three performances a day.

  • Everyone wins at county's Special Olympics

    BOILING SPRINGS LAKE—Everybody was a winner at the Brunswick County Special Olympics Spring Games Friday at South Brunswick High School.

    Everybody who competed got a ribbon to prove it.

    The athletes and coaches also each received a British-racing green tie-dyed T-shirt, worn proudly and testifying everybody was on the same team.

    The sun played peek-a-boo from behind the clouds, making the temperature in the upper 70s pleasant.

  • Anglers anxiously awaiting the arrival of near-shore kings

    Now that we’ve broken the hot/cold cycle and spring is working toward summer, the fishing is finally starting to get on track.

    The near-shore waters have warmed to 68 degrees, and the offshore waters are 70-plus degrees. Water temperatures are one of the keys to fish migrations, and king mackerel fishermen out there know what 68 degrees means. That is considered in the optimal temperature range for kings, and it means it will be very soon these hard–fighting and good-eating game fish invade our waters.

  • Surviving rejection and pondering murder mystery

    Last year I fulfilled a lifelong dream when I finished my novel, “Footes Creek.” It’s a mystery that takes place at a prestigious old country club in an upper-class bedroom community in northern New Jersey.

    The story begins when a Hispanic worker on the maintenance crew is brutally murdered. A few days later, another worker is found dead in his car at the bottom of the lake surrounding the famous 17th island green. The USGA is about to announce that Footes Creek will be added to the list of U.S .Open sites.

    Carolina Shores Men

    The Carolina Shores Men played a team event April 25. The scoring consisted of counting one low net on par fives, two low nets on par fours and three low nets on par threes.

    George Balbach, Frank Talak, Rich Hamilton and a blind draw took first with 111. Mike Devereux, George Bridges, Dick Polanski and Bill Teshler were second with 114 (match of cards). Gary Stewart, Keith Rogerson, Ron Buck and Roger Thompson finished third with 114. Bob Barrett, Dan Roberts, Bob Fyock and Don Errickson were fourth with 115.

  • West student-athletes learn from coach and captain retreat

    It’s a wise move to get there early. Then you can’t be accused of breaking the rules.

    West Brunswick’s contingency arrived first at the Spring Coach and Captain Retreat at the Radisson Governor’s Inn in Research Triangle Park.

    Trojan students Dylan Bowman, Mariah Evans and Chaz Earp immediately jumped in the unheated pool and swam. Then, with fellow student Breana Gause, they went to their rooms and ordered a pizza.

  • Lady Trojans cut gap but fall to Jacksonville

    The difference between the first and second time West Brunswick and Jacksonville’s soccer teams faced off was this time, the match had suspense.

    The Lady Cardinals won 4-0 last Wednesday night, with their first two goals scored on beautiful shots and their second two on controversial no-calls. The first time the teams met this season, Jacksonville cruised to an 11-0 victory.

    “It was a good game,” Jacksonville coach Dave Miller said Wednesday night. “West Brunswick is much improved from the first time we played them.”

    West Brunswick’s tennis team closed out its season Monday falling 9-0 to a traditional powerhouse.

    “We played one the strongest teams of the region in New Hanover, and they played up to their capabilities against us,” West coach Bob Bell said. “They are a very polished, well-coached team, and we'll probably see both them and Hoggard in the upcoming 4A playoffs. It is a shame that one of those teams may not get in.

    Whiteville’s Michael Wright had a no-hitter going until South Brunswick’s Ryan Morgan doubled in the seventh inning. Still, Whiteville held on for a 1-0 win last Wednesday.

    The loss puts South Brunswick and Whiteville in a tie for first place in the Waccamaw Conference standings as each has two losses.

    “We pitched well enough to win—our bats just went cold,” South coach Lee Shelton said. “Whiteville's pitcher did a good job.”
