Even his name was poetic.

How pleased I was Monday night to find PBS airing a documentary on my favorite baseball player of all time, Roberto Clemente.

He had a chiseled face that could have been on a Michelangelo statue, and I remembered his heart, too. What I had forgotten about was his arm.

West Brunswick High School officials presented Doug Rutter with a plaque of appreciation that also encased a clock before the varsisy baseball game against Hoggard Friday night.

Rutter, a longtime sports editor for The Brunswick Beacon, became a Brunswick County magistrate in March.

His wife, Susan, and daughter, Olivia, looked on as West athletic director Marcia Heady presented Rutter the plaque.

Finally, the weather has begun to settle, and water temperatures are on the rise. We’ve been back and forth between winter and spring too long, and I’m hoping we have finally shaken that trend.

During the past week and a half, the weather has finally stabilized—allowing fishermen to get out on the water. In addition, the warmer air temperatures have helped raise water temperatures, which has spurred the fish into moving and feeding.

I believe in exercise, in personal trainers, in massage therapy, in yoga, in walking and stretching, and even in acupuncture. I did not always feel this passionate about personal fitness, but I had an episode about 15 years ago that made me a true believer.

Early on Easter Monday morning, I rolled over in bed and felt something “ping” in my back. Pain shot through my lower back and down my left leg. I could barely move.
