  • Arson suspected in blazes

    SUPPLY—Three mobile home fires swept through a Supply neighborhood in less than 48 hours last weekend.

    Arson is suspected in all three.

    According to Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office incident reports, the first fire was reported just before 6 p.m. Friday at 2325 N. Bluebeard Trail. Later that evening, around 8:30 p.m., the second fire was reported at 2345 N. Bluebeard Trail.

    On Sunday, the third fire was reported around 5:30 p.m. at a home at 2350 N. Bluebeard Trail.

  • Remembering David Sandifer

    Brunswick County Commissioners Chairman David Sandifer, who died last Friday, was remembered Monday for his unwavering commitment to the community.

    The Rev. Phil Norris, a fellow county commissioner who officiated Sandifer’s memorial service, relived Sandifer’s commitment to his family, his friends and his extended family—the citizens of Brunswick County.

  • Brunswick County precincts to have organizational meetings

    Five Brunswick County Democratic Party precincts will have their organizational meetings at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 17, according to Vernon Ward, chairman of the Brunswick County Democratic Party.

    Hood Creek will meet in the Hood Creek Community Building, 3640 Maco Road; Belville will meet at the Belville Elementary School; Bolivia will meet at the Shrine Club, 596 Midway Road; Oak Island 2 will meet at the Oak Island Recreation Center, 3003 E. Oak Island Dr.; and The Shingletree 1 polling place has been moved to Sea Trail Shingletree 1.

  • County to accept credit cards for utility payments

    BOLIVIA—Brunswick County will now accept credit cards for utility payments and customers will be able to use them in the cafeteria at the county complex.

    County commissioners on Monday voted to approve two contracts which would allow the county to begin accepting debit and credit card payments and payments by electronic check.

    County finance director Ann Hardy said utility customers who opt to pay by credit card would be charged a $2 transaction fee per $100 payment.

  • BEMC awards community grants

    Brunswick Electric Membership Corporation (BEMC) recently announced the winners of 2008 BEMC Community Grants.

    Now in its sixth year, the program has awarded more than $147,000 to help local agencies and groups with worthwhile programs providing vital educational, social, cultural and economic development services to citizens in the BEMC service area.

    Grants are made to organization, not individuals, and range from $500-$2,500. This year’s grants totaled $22,465 to 16 area groups.

  • Calabash commissioners approve advertising for new administrator

    CALABASH—Town commissioners on Tuesday night approved placing an ad for a new town administrator.

    The position has been vacant since town administrator Donna Prince was fired by commissioners on Feb. 20.

    Kelley Southward has been serving as interim town clerk.

    The ad will be placed for a period of four to six weeks in various publications.

    Town commissioners also approved having pre-agenda meetings prior to their regular meetings.

  • Calabash fire chief and wife plan to retire (again) in June

    CALABASH—When they first settled in the seafood capital 12 years ago, Karl and Linda Bennett thought they were retiring.

    But then they started volunteering with the Calabash Fire Department. One thing led to another, and soon they were involved fulltime in a profession they thought they had left behind in Ravena, N.Y.

    After more than a decade with the Calabash department, fire chief Bennett and his wife, who serves as administrative assistant and board secretary for the department, plan to retire June 30. They have launched a search for their replacements.

  • Tree ordinance upheld in Carolina Shores

    CAROLINA SHORES—A Brunswick County small claims judgment has upheld the town’s tree ordinance.

    Town administrator Linda Herncane, speaking at a town meeting last week, said the decision reached last month was the result of a small claims suit filed by the town earlier this year.

    The defendant is Bill E. Lane, owner of Blue Border Travel Trailers at 9351 Ocean Highway West.

    According to the complaint, the town’s building inspection department noticed construction activity had occurred at the site while inspecting an adjacent subdivision last July.
