  • Clardy rolls 761 series at Brunswick Bowling Center

    Michael Clardy rolled a 761 series, one of four 700 sets bowled at the Brunswick County Bowling Center last week.

    Clardy had games of 246, 237 and 278 in the McDonald’s Amusement Classic league March 10.

    Rick Lachance and Sam Harris each bowled 708 sets in the McDonald’s league while Derek Frink had a 705 in the Extravaganza League March 12.

  • Oak Island fisherman sets state record for red grouper

    Not many people can say they caught the state record the first time they ever went out for a certain kind of fish.

    But that’s what happened to Chuck Deeter.

    The Oak Island resident set the North Carolina record for red grouper when he reeled in the 33-pound 8-ounce fish, according to a press release last week from the North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries.

    The grouper, which was weighed in at Anchorage Marina in Atlantic Beach, measured 35 inches in length and had a 25.5-inch girth.

  • Warmer temperatures, great fishing around the corner

    It has been a long winter, but spring officially starts this weekend, and I, for one, am looking forward to warmer temperatures and great fishing.

    In just a couple of short weeks, the offshore Gulf Stream waters will explode with life. Trolling in these productive waters will yield yellowfin tuna and wahoo, and bottom fishing will yield snapper and grouper.

    Closer inshore, the Atlantic Bonito will migrate into the area and hold over structure in the 45- to 60-foot depth range while the water temperatures are in the 60- to 66-degree range.

    Locke, Wilson, Ashley and Keife win top honors in the Shamrock Flight

    Diane Locke, Libby Wilson, Dave Ashley and Gary Keife won top honors in the Shamrock Flight with a 119 as Sea Trail had its annual St. Patrick’s Day tournament on the Byrd and Joes courses March 11.

    Each team counted its two best net balls.

    Cathy Bender, Marti Kennedy, Ches Burton and Al Kozel took second with a 122.

    Georgia Lounsbury, Dick Lehrer, Ralph Gardner and Mike Pozdol tied with Pat Lupi, George Hill, Dick Lawson and Tom Robbins for third at 125.

  • West to defend championship

    West Brunswick is the defending Beach Diamond Invitational Baseball Tournament champion.

    The eight-team tournament gets under way Friday with the Trojans already owning three victories against their Brunswick County counterparts.

    “He’s already beat me twice,” said South Brunswick coach Lee Shelton, “so I’d say his team is the favorite. And he’s beaten North once. They’re good.”

  • Softball tourney gets under way

    One positive way to look at the field for the 10th Touchstone Energy Beach Diamond Invitational Softball Tournament is that three-time winner West Johnston is not in the six-team field.

    The softball event takes on a different format for 2008, with two three-team pools set to determine who plays for the tournament title next Monday at 7 p.m. at West Brunswick High School.

    The 12-game tournament has been squeezed into two days, wrapped around Easter Sunday.

  • Ashley defeats West Brunswick

    SHALLOTTE—Errors in the early innings hurt the cause, and, ironically, the grandson of the Shallotte mayor went the distance for the visitors as Ashley High School defeated West Brunswick 7-3 Friday night.

    “We’re just making too many errors,” said West coach Mike Alderson. “We’re not focused. Going into the season, I thought defense would be our strong suit, but it’s been our Achilles heel. In the three games that we’ve lost, we beat ourselves.”

  • West Brunswick goalie fights off shots, but team comes up short

    SHALLOTTE—Goalkeepers hope to be as lonely as the guy in the Maytag repairman commercials, but West Brunswick’s Ariel Gravino didn’t have that luxury in a match last Wednesday.

    She faced 19 shots on goal and made a whopping 15 saves, but a trio of Laney High School’s shots slipped through, and the Trojans fell 3-0 in M.H. Rourk Stadium.

    “Ariel always does a really good job,” said West coach Laura Libero. “To have 15 saves out of 19 shots on goal is not too bad at all.”

  • West Brunswick Lady Trojans capture fifth softball win in a row

    SHALLOTTE—West Brunswick softball coaches had a hard time deciding when the last time the Lady Trojans had jumped off to a 7-1 start.

    “I think it was ’04,” said coach Joe Noble. “Amanda’s (daughter Amanda Noble) senior year we started out 6-0 before we lost our first game.”

    “I think it was ’03,” said pitching coach Mike Cronin.

    Neither mattered.
