    As we all start looking for plants as spring approaches, the following may be of some help:

    Many gardeners are addicted to visiting garden centers and nurseries and greenhouses in search of plants, trees, shrubs, annuals and houseplants. They shop and compare prices but are never quite sure what a plant is worth. The problem is some sort of valuation is placed on the plant. We try to figure out the worth or value of the plant in comparison to another source of supply. To some extent, that is a reasonable approach.

  • Waccamaw students to present '101 Dalmations'

    Nearly 100 Waccamaw students will take the stage this weekend as the school performs “101 Dalmations” at Odell Williamson Auditorium.

    This is the second year Waccamaw students have performed a musical. Last year, they performed “The Jungle Book.” Both shows are Disney Kids Productions.

    “They are an easy company to work with, and their shows are kid-friendly,” Cheri Skaggs, music teacher and musical director, said. “It makes sure the audience can be involved.”

  • Shallotte drug suspects face more charges

    Two men arrested last month in Shallotte for possession of more than 9,200 prescription pills are now facing numerous breaking and entering charges throughout North and South Carolina.

    Forty-year-old Richard Moore of Mayesville and Jonathan Nowokunski, 26, of Oak Island were arrested last month after Shallotte Police responded to an alarm activation at Lowe’s Home Improvement on Whiteville Road.

    More than 9,200 pills with a street value of about $40,000-$50,000 were recovered from the suspects’ motel room after their arrest.

  • Who will run the local department?

    CALABASH—What does the future hold for the Calabash Volunteer Fire Department?

    That was a subject of debate at a Carolina Shores budget retreat last week.

    Carolina Shores town commissioner Gere Dale, who represents his town on the fire department board, broached the topic, drawing fire from Mayor Steve Selby after suggesting one option is for the town to take it over.

    “I think a financial feasibility study is not only necessary but I think essential,” said Dale, who sought commissioners’ comments.

  • Brunswick County Chamber presents 2007 awards

    SUNSET BEACH—Pete and Dotty Callahan have been named Brunswick County’s 2007 Citizens of the Year.

    The duo, who donate their time visiting residents of a local nursing home, were honored Tuesday at the Brunswick County Chamber of Commerce annual awards luncheon at Sea Trail Conference Center.

    The Callahans are ministers to the homebound of St. Brendan Catholic Church and pay regular visits to Autumn Care in Shallotte. There they celebrate Mass and eat meals with residents. It’s something they’ve been doing since 1989.

  • Low-impact development, association's goals presented at Realtors' annual luncheon

    SUPPLY—Low-impact development and other issues facing Realtors were discussed Tuesday at the Brunswick County Association of Realtors’ annual impact luncheon at the association’s new digs on Stone Chimney Road.

    Steve Candler, the association’s governmental affairs director, presented to association members and elected officials the group’s goals and issues for the upcoming legislative term.

  • Hospital authority members table health needs survey

    SUPPLY—Brunswick County Hospital Authority members have agreed to table a proposal for a countywide health needs survey.

    At their regular meeting last Wednesday, board members voted to table the survey until they can gather more information about two previous surveys conducted by the county health department and Novant Health.

    Ron Anderson, the authority’s vice-chairman, said the proposed survey would identify any health needs in the county that are unmet.

  • Board considers rezoning, special exceptions

    BOLIVIA—Members of the Brunswick County Planning Board considered the following items at their regular meeting Monday night:

    •Board members tabled until April 14 a special exception for the First Tee Learning Center on Tarklin Court, Shallotte. The petitioner requested its consideration be tabled for the education facility expansion. The request was previously tabled at the board’s Feb. 11 meeting.

  • Woodlands at Crow Creek has grand opening for wellness center

    More than 100 residents of the Woodlands at Crow Creek attended the grand opening of their new Wellness Center. Its purpose is for residents to remain and become active without having to leave their neighborhood.

    “With the number of residents in attendance today and the excitement in our conversations with them, it is obvious that our community has become a family atmosphere,” said Brian Smith, contractor/developer.
