OCEAN ISLE BEACH—Strolling the west end of Ocean Isle Beach eight years ago, metal sculptor and artist David McCune noticed a hulking chunk of wood drifting in the water.
Bulky and battered by the restless surf, the unwieldy lumber was not something to catch the attention of an unseeing eye. But McCune saw potential.
He asked town officials if he could have the wood, and permission was granted.
“They would rather me deal with it than them,” he said.
