  • Some eighth-graders to attend new school this fall

    About 100 eighth-graders won’t be returning to the county middle schools when schools resume in August. Instead, they will attend a PLC—a professional learning community, a smaller, more intimate environment with a 16:1 student to teacher ratio and teachers called “coaches.”

  • About 730 students graduate

    Add about 730 graduates to the Brunswick County Schools alumni list. That’s how many students graduated this past weekend at the county’s commencement ceremonies throughout the county.

    BRUNSWICK COUNTY ACADEMY

    Brunswick County Academy had its ceremony Friday evening and 27 graduates were announced.

    Principal Sandra Robinson said graduates are “living in a great time,” and graduates must go out and find their places in the world.

  • International Paper awards $50,500 to educational, nonprofit groups

    The International Paper Company Foundation and International Paper’s Riegelwood Mill awarded $50,500 in grants to more than 30 educational and nonprofit groups in the area, according to a news release.

    “We owe our success to the communities that support us and in return, we are committed to helping them,” said Floyd Whitmire, Riegelwood Mill manager.

  • County, BCC join forces for training program

    BOLIVIA—Brunswick County Emergency Services has teamed up with Brunswick Community College for a fire and rescue training program.

    Emergency services director Randy Thompson said the partnership was proposed to “address some concerns,” various fire chiefs throughout the county had raised.

    On Monday, county commissioners approved the partnership, giving Thompson the green light to move forward with the training program.

  • Shallotte considers urban waterfront district for development

    SHALLOTTE—Although the town’s 10-year vision plan hasn’t been officially adopted yet, the planning board is looking into the feasibility of applying for state permits allowing the creation of an urban waterfront district.

    Obtaining the required permits from the N.C. Division of Coastal Management would require a lot of planning and paperwork, but Shallotte officials say it would be worth it. The planning board and board of aldermen will most likely be working on the permits for the next several months, said town administrator Paul Sabiston.

  • Shallotte approves budget that keeps same tax rate, increases water fees

    SHALLOTTE—Aldermen have approved the town budget for fiscal year 2008-2009, holding the property tax rate at 27 cents per $100 valuation of property but increasing the water rates to keep up with the county’s increases and adopting a tiered water rate system.

    No town residents turned out for Tuesday night’s public hearing on the budget proposal, and town administrator Paul Sabiston explained the proposed budget to the board.

    The budget includes a 20.8 percent increase in tax valuation over the current year.

  • Builder has beef about Sunset Beach building department

    SUNSET BEACH—It was just a routine pier repair, or so Tommy Perry thought.

    When the longtime Oak Island dock builder went to the town of Sunset Beach to outline minor repairs he planned to make to an Intracoastal Waterway pier for a client on West Canal Drive, he was told his plans would have to be approved by a civil engineer.

    It was the first time in his 22 years of building docks with his father for American Fish Marine Construction and Boat Yard that Perry said he was required to obtain an engineer’s approval to do minor repairs on a privately owned pier.

  • You're finally here; welcome to the 'real world' 2008 graduates

    Twelve or more years of hard work and hassle came to a dramatic, yet simple conclusion last week as hundreds of Brunswick County graduates picked up their tassels and moved them from one side of their mortarboards to the other.

    In that gesture, often accentuated by the ceremonial tossing of the mortarboard into the air, students made the transition from being kids to almost, but not quite, grown up. After pomp and circumstance, they now find themselves lingering on the outskirts of the “real world.”
