  • Eating to lower cholesterol

For the last couple of weeks, I’ve been sharing information about heart healthy eating and cooking. This week, I’ll continue, since I’m teaching a series of classes on that topic in October and I’ve done a lot of reading on the topic. One area that is a concern to many people, whether you have heart disease or just trying to eat a healthy diet, is cholesterol. This will be the focus in week No. 2 in our class series.

  • For most Southern folks, Brunswick stew is pure comfort

I remember reading somewhere about men being from Mars and women from Venus. If we are talking about the eating department, that could be true. When it comes to comfort foods, most men prefer hearty meals, while women look for snacks that require little or no preparation.

Most of us men find comfort in foods associated with meals prepared by our mothers, such as mashed potatoes, pasta, meat and soup, rather than snacks and sweets … except for ice cream! But what is comfort for men is just work for women.

  • What is this mystery plant?

     By John Nelson

When I was a kid during the time when the car had roll-down window handles, they would take me and my sister out driving around in the South Carolina Lowcountry every now and then. That’s when I started appreciating just how nice the “low country” of the Palmetto State is. I remember family outings late in the summer to visit some friends at their country home in Hampton County, not too far from the Savannah River, having lunch in the kitchen with what seemed to be miles of old screened windows letting in a fragrant breeze.

  • Strangers in a foreign land become friends

Every once in a while, Hubby Dear and I opt to attend a church service for the Latino community. Neither of us speak nor read Spanish, so it is both an adventure and a challenge to be participants, not just visitors. It is also a tremendous learning experience.

We listen for words similar to our own native language or ones that are ring more familiarly with other languages we know or have studied. We follow along with prayers in the rite, whispering them as an English accompaniment to the variety of Spanish accents ringing around us.
