  • Leland gang member charged in Saturday standoff

    Police arrested a Leland gang member following a standoff Saturday in Wilmington.

    Justin “Juddy” Oliver, 28, is charged with discharging a firearm within city limits, resisting or delaying arrest and second-degree trespassing. He is a validated member of the Bloods Gang, Wilmington Police Department spokeswoman Jennifer Dandron said.

    Police responded about 6 a.m. to a call about a man with a gun an apartment at Houston Moore Terrace in the 1300 block of Greenfield Street. After they arrived, they heard two gunshots come from within the residence.

  • Northwest police officer dies of accidental gunshot wound

    A Northwest police officer died Friday night of an accidental gunshot wound.

    Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Unit detectives found 37-year-old Michael Lynn Morgan dead of an apparent gunshot wound after responding to a call dispatchers received about 5:30 p.m. regarding someone in cardiac arrest at 520 Maple Branches Drive in Leland.

  • Brunswick County Teen Court set for Jan. 23

    The next session of Brunswick County Teen Court will be Jan. 23 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Brunswick County Courthouse. Brunswick County Teen Court is a partnership program between Communities In Schools of Brunswick County and the Brunswick County District Attorney’s Office, made possible through financial support provided by the Juvenile Crime Prevention Council and Brunswick County Schools.

  • 2018 Women’s March planned for Jan. 20

    The 2018 Women’s March will take place Jan. 20 in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

    Hosted by Grand Strand Action Together and the Coastal Carolina Coalition, the march will start at 11 a.m. at Anderson Park, 2000 N. Ocean Blvd., and conclude at Plyler Park, 1309 N. Ocean Blvd. The rally will begin at noon.

  • Sheriff’s office seeks stolen truck

    The Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office is looking for a teal 2002 Ford F350 XLF Power Stroke diesel truck stolen sometime between Jan. 8 and Jan. 9 in the 8100 block of River Road, Southport.

    According to a Facebook post, the tailgate of the truck has a unique pinstripe design that can also be found on the dashboard of the truck.

  • Leland police seek TV thief

    Leland police are looking for a man who stole televisions from Wal-Mart.

    The man stole two 55-inch TVs, valued together at $822.87, from the store at 1112 New Pointe Blvd.: one Dec. 31 and another Jan. 11.

    The thief is described as a white man with a small frame, dark hair and facial hair.

    Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Jonathan Kazee at 371-0274.

  • Local service dog honored with award

    BOILING SPRING LAKES— It didn’t take very long for Boiling Spring Lakes Fire Rescue Capt. Nathan McConnell to realize the dog in the images projected onto the screen was his own service dog, Ember, during the sixth annual paws4people Family Reunion.

    Her photos were being shown because she had won an award for her work as a service dog with paws4people, a nonprofit foundation with an office in Wilmington that helps pair those in need with assistance dogs.

    “By the second picture I knew it was her,” he said.
