A Leland police officer is being treated at New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington after he and a shooter exchanged gunfire Friday night.
The shooter died as a result of their injuries. The officer was wearing a bullet-resistant vest which aided in saving his life, District Attorney Jon David said.
Initial reports indicated the officer was shot once in the chest and several times in the legs, David said.
Town Manager David Hollis said the officer, who he declined to identify, is in surgery.
