West Green’s mistakes lead to loss to Hoggard

 Hoggard scored two unearned runs in the top of the eighth inning and went on to beat West Green 6-4 Monday night in a Central Carolina Scholastic Summer League baseball game in Shallotte.


West (6-3) had chances to tie the score in the bottom of the eighth. Gray Cheers led off with a single and Austin Turner singled to right field. Hoggard got a double play when a bunt attempt was popped up to the pitcher, who then threw second to double up the pinch runner.

West loaded the bases when Cooper Hewett and Charlie Carcich walked. The game ended on a strikeout.

West scored a run in the bottom of the second off two errors. Turner led off and reached first on a dropped third strike. He stole second and went to third on a groundout by Hewett. Turner scored on an errant pickoff at first base.

Hoggard scored twice in the fourth after getting two walks against reliever Charlie Carcich. Turner came in to pitch and Hoggard scored two runs off two wild pitches and a groundout.

Hoggard scored twice in the fifth off a two-out infield error.

West scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth to tie the score 4-4. Jake Elliott led off with an infield single. Austin Evans was hit by a pitch. Each advanced a base on Cam Davis’ sacrifice bunt. One run scored on a wild pitch and Sean Hewett cut the lead to 4-3 when he singled to right field. Against a new pitcher, Hunter Ashburn walked. He ran to second when the catcher mishandled the ball. On the throw to second, Sean Hewett scored.

Hoggard scored in the eighth off a two-out infield throwing error and a passed ball.

Cooper Hewett pitched two hitless, scoreless innings, striking out two and hitting one. Carcich gave up two runs in one-plus innings. He walked two and struck out one. Turner pitched 1.2 innings, giving up one hit, two walks and two unearned runs. Johnathan Carlyle pitched 1.1 innings, giving up two hits and one walk. He struck out one. Cheers pitched the final two innings, giving up two hits and two unearned runs. He hit one and struck out four.

Catcher Jake Elliott threw out a runner for the first out in the second and he threw out a runner for the first out in the sixth.

McDuffie and Elliott each had two hits for West.

West finishes 2-1 in the season series against Hoggard.
