  • Letter to elected officials

    To the editor:

    I am writing to let you know I strongly oppose the new insurance ruling that will allow insurance companies to increase coastal insurance rates by nearly 30 percent. To even consider such a huge increase is outrageous, especially when you consider their stated reason: “We are due for a huge devastating hurricane on the N.C. coast and if we have a storm of such magnitude, it will virtually wipe out all the insurance company financial reserves.”

  • Can you hear Darwin?

    To the editor: If you are one who believes in evolution you should listen to Darwin calling out from the grave saying, “my theory is not true.”

    He says, “I told you if it could be demonstrated any complex organ existed which could not possibly have been formed by numerous successive, slight modifications, my (Darwin’s) theory would absolutely break down.”ee(Darwin in The Origin of Species 6th edition)

    If you watched the Lifetime TV movie “America” recently, you are aware of the many challenges and obstacles our Brunswick County foster youth face. They will face even more challenges when they age out of the system and are no longer receiving services and support.

  • Good annexation example

    To the editor:

    I congratulate Shallotte’s recent and proper use of annexation of the Wildwood Village property; not by force, but by request. This is the way it should be done statewide. In this case, the people affected actually had a voice.

  • Taking away our rights?

    To the editor:

    Our new Attorney General Eric Holder is proposing the ban on the sale of assault weapons to U.S. citizens be reinstated. He cites the fact Mexico is complaining guns are getting into the hands of gangs as the reason, while ignoring the huge arms traffic business in the rest of the world.

    Mr. President, where in the Constitution does it say America should pass laws at the request of other nations that will take away the rights of our citizens?

  • Supports planetarium, museum

    To the editor:

    You asked us, the readers, to find the best of everything in Brunswick County, and there’s no better time than this to

    expound on the cultural, educational and entertaining value that is brought to our county through our Ingram

    Planetarium and Museum of Coastal Carolina.

    I have been a volunteer since we moved to Sunset Beach five years ago and I continue to be so very proud of all the programs these two entities have to offer our area.

  • Supports Robert Robinson

    To the editor: I want the people of Brunswick County to know they have had the privilege of having a great public servant for 28 years. I remember a young Register of Deeds Robert Robinson in 1981. He was full of energy and dedicated to doing his new job. He never lost this enthusiasm over the next 28 years.

    Robert was anxious to be ahead of the curve on technology to better serve his customers both public and attorneys who toiled long hours completing title searches. He was tireless in his efforts to do the job he was duly elected to perform.

  • Ditch issues

    To the editor: At the February Town of Carolina Shores Board of Commissioners’ meeting, Commissioner Gere Dale publicly chastised the residents of the Village at Calabash development for expressing their feelings they were being unfairly treated economically. He then went on to point out the Village received services in the form of road repair and street lighting approximately equal to the property taxes collected from the development, and therefore the Villagers had no right to complain.

  • Questioning Holden Beach

    To the editor: After reviewing the minutes from the Town of Holden Beach’s last meeting, it makes me wonder. They claim to have a certificate of occupancy for the EOC building on Dec. 9, 2008, which allows them to use the building, deemed finished, but they have apparently not paid the contractor and have contacted his bonding company and are likely to attempt to receive a “settlement.”

    If the building is complete and I have seen them use it, why was the contractor not paid?
