To the editor: I read with much disappointment your editorial in the Sept. 11 issue regarding the Shallotte leaders concerns about accepting the SAFER grant. Such shortsightedness is indefensible. Have they already forgotten about the disaster in Charleston, where the deaths of firefighters was due in part to having too few men riding on their trucks?

To the editor: How did we get in this mess? Answer: Liberal Democrats, greedy politicians and executives and the liberal media.

There is general consensus these bad residential loans to people who couldn’t afford them (promoted by liberals) started this credit disaster so all could have a house whether they could afford it or not. That leads to more votes for liberals. It then hit the fan that the quasi-governmental entities Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae were financially unstable.

Guess who the top recipients of campaign money were? Chris Dodd and Barack Obama.

To the editor: This weekend our community experienced an event that went against the grain when it comes to culture and societal norms.

Alongside “Nights in Rodanthe,” a movie about a couple involved in an extramarital affair, came “Fireproof,” a movie about a couple whose marriage was on the rocks, but with the help of a loving God and caring friends and family, were able to recapture their love for each other, overcome temptations and learn what it means to love unconditionally.

To the editor: In these days and times it is rare to have a stranger utter a simple greeting to you. Recently, I had an encounter with a stranger that has given me hope.

On July 16, I started having chest pains and I began driving myself to the hospital. Along the way I stopped at a gas station. One of the employees, Sue Rhodes, noticed that something was wrong and asked if I needed an ambulance. I declined her offer and returned to my car.
