  • The bigger the government, the worse things are

    To the editor: Mr. McGinnis counsels us to vote for the politician who can return to us the most earmarks, a.k.a. pork. Emphasis is on “return.”

    Better we not send it to Washington to begin with. The town hall, not to mention the state capitol, is where these monies should come from.

  • An open letter to Sen. Richard Burr

    To the editor: I am in receipt of your [Sen. Richard Burr’s] letter dated Aug. 12, 2008, whereby you related to me what you are doing to help alleviate the major problem of fuel costs facing all Americans today. You indicated you cosponsored the Gas Price Reduction Act of 2008 (S.3202), which is “a more serious and comprehensive solution to our energy crisis.”

    The major conditions of your proposed legislation are:

    • Exploration would have to be at least 50 miles off the coast.

    • Meet stringent environmental protections.

  • Who is a pig?

    To the editor: Sen. Obama, you pledged to run a clean campaign and not resort to low-level personal attacks, but your new TV ad makes fun of Sen. McCain not being able to use a computer to send e-mail.

    Well, he can’t physically use his hands to type because of the beatings he took during his five years as a POW.

    In my book, Sen. Obama, you are the pig with lipstick.

  • Why won't McIntyre debate?

    To the editor: Why has Rep. Mike McIntyre refused to debate his opponent on the issues that affect his constituent’s quality of life?

    He has plenty of time to travel around the county dispensing money for his pet projects that engender a photo-op, but no time to discuss issues like energy, taxes and national security.

    Why isn’t the media asking for a meeting between the candidates? An open discussion that highlights differences can enable the electorate to make an informed choice. Is McIntyre not willing to make the time for this important activity?

  • McIntyre refuses the Democratic process

    To the editor: Mike McIntyre refuses to debate Will Breazeale. This is abysmal for a representative of the 7th District of North Carolina to refuse debate to a challenger for his elected seat. McIntyre claims Will Breazeale is not a credible candidateeereally? Section 2 of the United States Constitution says “No Person shall be a Representative who shall not have attained to the Age of twenty five Years, and been seven Years a Citizen of the United States, and who shall not, when elected, be an Inhabitant of that State in which he shall be chosen.”

  • Urges caution on U.S. 17

    To the editor: I would like to inform anyone traveling north on U.S. 17 at the intersection of Lanvale Road of what I consider an intersection design flaw. There is potential for a bad traffic accident around mile marker No. 41.

    The NCDOT has placed a traffic light just over the railroad pass. The railroad pass creates a hill that makes it hard to see the light and any cars stopped at the light.

  • Residents should check shelter for lost pets

    To the editor: Recently, after going to Brunswick County Animal Services twice, I was happy to find my lost puppy “Buddy.”

    Shelter workers do a great job of taking care of lost and found pets. They need people to go out there in person and look for their pets.

    Describing them on the phone and actually seeing them are two different things. One person’s description of his or her pet may be opposite of what another person sees.

  • Why are so many cases dismissed?

    To the editor: I am a homeowner on Ocean Isle Beach and a Beacon subscriber. I live in Monroe.

    Week after week, I read the district court dockets. I would like someone to explain to me why, week after week, I see cases are voluntarily dismissed.

    Am I confused or does that mean a police officer took the time to write a ticket and then is too lazy to go to court to make sure the person is proven guilty? If that is the case, there is no excuse for it and it is a waste of taxpayers’ money.

  • Widow wants crime registry

    To the editor:

    Recently, I e-mailed Rep. Mike McIntyre requesting his help to push for the implementation and enforcement of a violent criminals’ registry in North Carolina. I would also like tougher laws for repeat offenders.

    McIntyre’s response was to inform me we already have a sex offenders’ registry and “since you are interested in criminal registries, we are trying to pass a bill through legislation to set up a drug offenders’ registry.”
