  • Upset about animal rules

    To the editor: Re: “Agreeable animal welfare changes” article by Laura LewiseeTo say I am shocked and heartsick does not begin to express the views of myself and many others I know who are concerned about the welfare of animals.

    In my opinion, members of our state General Assembly, the Brunswick County Board of Health and Brunswick County Animal Services have taken giant steps backward.

  • School name should reflect community

    To the editor: I read with interest your front-page article in a recent paper, “Middle school to be named Cedar Grove.”

    I first want to say thank you to Scott Milligan and Shirley Babson for their commitment to all of the people in the Lockwood Folly community who will have children and grandchildren attending the soon-to-be-new middle school.

    Too bad Mr. Hobbs was not as committed to his original thoughts on naming the school.

  • New route could hamper hurricane evacuations

    To the editor: The N.C. Department of Transportation is busy installing “Michigan left-hand turn lanes” at the intersections of Ocean Isle Beach Road and Mount Pisgah Road onto U.S. 17 as a traffic control to help reduce terrible accidents that have occurred there.

    Ocean Isle Beach Road and Mount Pisgah Road are the major evacuation routes from Ocean Isle Beach and Holden Beach.

  • Thanks for cabana ban

    To the editor: In two short weeks, we will once again be making the trip to Ocean Isle Beach just as we have for the last 25 years

    The “kids” fly in from several distant points across the country and come with the same eagerness for the beach as when they were younger.

    All of us are thrilled to know we will once again be able to see and enjoy the full expanse of the beach. Thank you town council for bringing back the beach for everyone.

  • Cabana debate should continue

    To the editor: I would like to respond Mr. Godwin’s article that he and other readers have had enough of the cabana issue. While he may have had enough discussion on this issue, others and I have not.

    When a decision is made based on false assumptions, supported by false information, has at best marginal public support and is enforced with a heavy hand, don’t be surprised if some members of the public are offended and refuse to close the debate.

  • Soles has failed the public again

    To the editor: Once again, Sen. R.C. Soles Jr. has failed to protect property owners by signing a petition that would allow for a forced annexation bill to be heard in the Senate.

    The bill provides for a nine-month moratorium on forced annexations while the General Assembly studies the impact on residents.

    Soles’ refusal to sign the petition indicates he once again votes in lockstep with liberals like Sen. Tony Rand. Soles doesn’t care about his constituents; he only cares about retaining power in the Senate.

  • Questions port's impact on the environment

    To the editor: According to the Brunswick County tax assessor’s office, the N.C. Ports Authority owns 594 acres of land on the Lower Cape Fear River next to the city of Southport that is intended for use as an international port container terminal.

    Of those 594 acres, 348 acres are treated by the tax assessor as marsh.

    The N.C. Ports Authority consultants’ report has figures on required space for container terminals based on other existing and planned terminals.

  • Thanks for supporting military project

    To the editor: As the daughter of a retired U.S. Navy Chief, I knew I wanted to use my high school senior project to help military families.

    I chose to collect donations for the Fisher House at the Fort Bragg Army Base in Fayetteville. As I thought about how to accomplish this, I decided to ask my neighbors in Brierwood Estates for their help.

    I passed out letters and pamphlets explaining what I was doing and why. I was so touched by the generosity of my neighbors in Brierwood.

  • Supports POW-MIA legislation

    To the editor: For years, the National Alliance of Families of POWs/MIAs, Rolling Thunder Inc. and other veteran organizations, have pressed our federal government for full disclosure about our Prisoners of War/Missing In Action (POW/MIA), from Iraq, Vietnam, Operation Desert Storm, the Cold War/Korea Conflict and World War II.

    In his book, “An Enormous Crime,” former U.S. Rep. Bill Hendon (R-NC) chronicled that when the U.S. withdrew from Vietnam, it knowingly left behind hundreds of POWs.

    There is evidence to warrant further investigation.

  • Get Democrats out of office

    To the editor: The Democrats have turned the energy issue into a three-ring circus. Gasoline is now more than $4 a gallon, and this is strangling our economy.

    In the Senate ring, Sen. Harry Reid (D-Nev.) has said on camera coal and oil make us sick and will not allow us (United States) to have any more.

    In the House ring, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Ca.) is totally refusing to allow any more drilling for oil.
