  • Use proper irrigation

    To the editor: The morning was clear and sunny with the fresh warmth of a spring day. Flowers were blossoming and the grass was a rich green, but, alas, all was not rosy.

    Upon retrieving my newspaper, I was greeted by an unfortunate display of drenched driveways, sidewalks, garage doors and fences. It had been a busy night for errant sprinklers.

    This is a prime example of wasting an alarming amount of water. And we are still facing a decade of drought conditions. The EPA estimates that more than 50 percent of commercial and residential irrigation water goes to waste.

  • Invites public to church

    To the editor: This message is to make you aware of something in your neighborhood.

    Please take note of this.

    This is important because it is for anyone who would like to come and see what I am talking about. It is in the same old building and has the same name.

    The remarkable part of this is you only need to love God and have just a little faith in Him. Come visit the small church in your area.

  • Be energy independent

    To the editor: I am fed up with the continued stonewalling and lack of any progress on our critical energy situation by members of the United States Congress.

    Their inaction puts the nation at peril.

    These folks are the ones who are most responsible for our $4 gas. There are many things that need to be done to ensure our energy independence. We should be doing all of these now without delay.

  • Reasons not to like Mike

    To the editor: A June 12 letter called for Rep. Mike McIntyre to be voted out of Congress, saying 10 years was enough and his stand with Democratic party beliefs was against what the writer believed in.

    Here are two more reasons to vote him out this election:

    McIntyre voted in lockstep with his Democratic Party bosses for HR-6, the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007.

  • Vote Dems out of office

    To the editor: For the last 30 years or so, our American family has grown by 50 million, plus or minus, yet we have managed to house, feed and clothe them without being allowed to build new nuclear power plants, refineries or drill for more oil or gas when we sit on some of the largest proven reserves in the world.

    This is outstanding because it shows we are becoming energy efficient in spite of our growth. Other neighboring families on our planet are now buying up energy and making energy cost more for our family.

  • Canopy rule not a sensible solution

    To the editor: Recently at Ocean Isle Beach, I was about to get my almost-brand-new canopy out of the car and set it up on the beach, as I do each year in front of our rental cottage, but I was waylaid by the lure of the morning paper.

    Horror of horrors, I read the letters to the editor of the Beacon and discovered I was about to become a local lawbreaker—maybe even a felon—for putting up a canopy.

    There were no signs in front of my cottage warning me about this, and no, the Realtor who rented me the cottage had not warned me to arrive canopy-less.

  • Disagrees with allegations

    To the editor: A recent letter to the editor made blatantly false assumptions about my beliefs and voting record.

    My record in Congress has been very clear in these items about which the false statements where made. Here are the facts about the items the writer mentioned:

    (1) I have consistently voted pro-life, and I have never voted for abortion on demand or for late-term abortion. National Right to Life has consistently recognized my pro-life voting record.

  • Cement plant and community safety

    To the editor: Instead of taking direct responsibility for the environmental safety of the community, [New Hanover] county officials have said it will be up to the regulators to make sure the Titan Cement plant won’t do any harm.

    A recent news report, however, stated, “80 percent of cement plants (including Titan) have had either formal or informal compliance violations in the past five years.”

    A recent analysis of the area near a TXI Riverside cement plant in California showed hexavalent chromium levels 20 times higher than what was acceptable.

  • State port not a good idea

    To the editor: The proposed state port near Southport is not a good idea and should not be started.

    Like most proposals by a small number of business interests, there are the usual promises of good-paying jobs that don’t materialize.

    Mechanization and computers will handle much of the movement of goods. Subcontractors paying the lowest wages, without benefits, will provide manual labor.

  • Thanks to Samaritan who returned purse

    To the editor: While visiting the beach on Thursday, June 5, my purse fell out of my basket and I did not realize it until I was at the home of my friend’s grandparents in Sunset Beach.

    A good Samaritan found it in the sand, turned the purse over to the beach patrol and they sent it over to the police department where I claimed it.

    I am very appreciative, as the purse contained my camera and birthday money. Thank you very much, and I wish you well.
