To the editor:
I received an email this morning that documented with actual film footage the rescue of people from Manhattan Island on 9/11. It was the largest boat evacuation in history, rescuing 500,000 people in nine hours. Hundreds of boats, all sizes, converged on the lower end of Manhattan to transport the dust-covered masses to safety.
It took me back to that fateful day, but not to reflect on the horror and loss of life. What I remembered was the courage and compassion of the American people.
