  • Clinton should not step aside

    To the editor: There is no justification for Sen. Hillary Clinton to step aside in favor of Sen. Barrack Obama to be the Democratic Party nominee for U.S. president.

    She has earned her place as the nominee via many years of dedication and hard work to improve the lives and circumstances of U.S. citizens.

    Former Secretary of State Madeline Albright said as First Lady, Hillary Clinton was briefed prior to the many trips she made to foreign countries; trips that were purposeful.

  • Is Holden Beach really a family beach?

    To the editor: I just heard the sad news about David Sandifer’s death.

    I did not know Mr. Sandifer personally, but I had the opportunity to work with him when I purchased my house on Holden Beach.

    At the time, I did not know much about the area except it was a small town with a nice beach. I saw it as an escape from busy city life. Mr. Sandifer saw it as much more.

    I had several discussions with him about the area, and all he could say were positive things: how much he enjoyed living here and how Holden Beach had a reputation for being a great family beach.

  • Remember the needy in your community

    To the editor: I have been honored to serve in the North Carolina General Assembly for the past 40 years.

    Many of the friends and acquaintances I have made are frequent visitors to the area and are envious of the scenic beauty and relaxed lifestyle they experience on vacation.

    They have read the national and state headlines about the economic downturn and related housing troubles, but they do not understand the underpinning of Brunswick County’s year-round economy is construction.

  • Stealing signs not the American way

    To the editor: This past weekend, I proudly staked my Obama ’08 sign in the front yard of my home in the Landing II.

    The thought briefly passed through my mind someone might steal it.

    I quickly pushed that thought out of the way, mentally chiding myself for not giving more credit to the residents of the county where I grew up.

    Imagine my dismay to discover the sign was stolen the first night it was up.

  • The horse race continues in '08

    To the editor: As each was before it, the “Big Race of ’92” was a race between Money’s Might, Moral Mission and Military Muscle.

    Early in the race, Money’s Might and Moral Mission left Military Muscle running a distant third. The cheers of the fans then pushed Money’s Might on to an easy victory.

    The winning jockey celebrated his victory over Moral Mission with big cigars and busy bottoms, redefining in the process the universal understanding of “illicit sexual relations” among jockeys, horses and fans.

  • Readers give differing views of sheriff situation

    To the editor: I have lived in Brunswick County since 1983. I worked the polls for Ronald Hewett. I believed in him then and I believe in him now.

    I remember when he had people shooting at his home; I even saw the bullet holes. No wonder he moved off the road, and who else is supposed to watch his property if not the law?

    I know I would have but I’m just a citizen of Brunswick County. Now we can’t have that, so whose job is it?

  • Give sand trucks a holiday, too

    To the editor: I am an owner of an oceanfront property on Holden Beach and have been aware that beach renourishment was scheduled for some time on our part of the beach.

    I contacted town hall several times prior to a meeting in November and then again for Christmas 2007. There was no set date.

    My husband was at the beach in February this year for 10 days and there was no activity. I assumed the renourishment was put on hold for this year.

  • Book about Jones is enlightening

    To the editor: In the midst of this past week’s news concerning our sheriff, I have been busy promoting the book “Out With Three: The Murder and Betrayal of Bald Head Island Police Officer Davina Buff Jones.”

    Timing is truly everything. From the first proof I read around Thanksgiving 2007, to our initial printed books arriving appropriately on Valentine’s Day 2008, to our second order coming on the holiday of the resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, I know wholeheartedly this is all God’s timing.

  • Amount of cheap labor appalling

    To the editor: I’ve been following the news both in the paper and on TV concerning the indictment against Ron Hewett. I’m writing to put a different spin on the controversy.

    I am appalled at the low dollar amount that has been attached to the embezzlement charges. As a private citizen, I have had trees removed from my property.

    I would love to have had access to “cheap labor” like Mr. Hewett did when he had his 52 trees removed.

    Unfortunately in my case, I found the charge was per tree, and quite high, I might add.
