  • Streetreach wants to help

    To the editor:
    Brunswick County Streetreach makes a promise to people in crisis. We will do all we can to help them improve their lives. We will try to the best of our ability to use local resources and to provide overnight emergency shelter during the coldest months of the year (Nov. 1-March 1).
    Behind this promise is a dedicated board of directors, our president, churches and many volunteers who fuel the mission of our organization.

  • Thanks for helping BSRI

    To the editor:
    I would like to thank everyone who stepped forward with their generosity and support and answered our plea for donations that made it possible for Brunswick Senior Resources Inc. (BSRI) to purchase four much-needed Meals on Wheels trailers.
    With the addition of these trailers, BSRI will now be able to deliver additional services and resources to seniors in Brunswick County.

  • Fitness program could help others

    To the editor:
    I was just reading Elsa Bonstein’s article on Dr. Glenn Lunday, called “Chiropractor discusses fitness, weight loss and golf.”
    It is a good, helpful article for anyone who reads it; however, I had also seen the picture of the law enforcement officers on the front page of your paper. It looks like most of them have weight problems.

  • What’s your beef, reader?

    To the editor:
    In response to Mr. Kuthe’s opinion, “What is your beef?” Is it gun owners? Christians? Perhaps gun regulations?
    You mentioned founding-father slave-owners. Hey, pick a topic and stick to it and focus on whatever it is you want to rail about.
    The shortcomings in your argument are pathetically apparent. Hopefully, the tides change and you and your blanket-bombing with no specific target drift north with the tide to the shores of Teddy Kennedy and not southwest to Sunset Beach, or maybe to D.C.

  • Writer needs to get real

    To the editor:
    I am amazed at the letter that states gun owners are out of their minds and are afraid of someone stealing their Bibles. I really don’t see the connection, unless the writer works for Obama.
    According to a Gallup poll in 2011, 47 percent of the people in this country owned guns. Seems unlikely we are all as out of our minds as the writer.
    I suppose he believes that drug laws have stopped drug sales, prostitution no longer exists, and everyone obeys the speed limit and doesn’t fudge their tax returns.

    Every so often, a veteran gets teed off about the way government or the VA treats them when they cry out for help. Some veterans keep it bottled inside. Where is the best place to go for a start?

    To the editor:
    I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all at the Beacon for your support following this loss of a great friend and co-worker.
    The community support and outpouring of love for Kyle Jones’ family, the sheriff’s office and its staff has been overwhelming.
    I think I speak for all of us when I say that Kyle will be missed and that the support of and the love of our community is what keeps us going.

  • Councilwoman talks about taking sides

    To the editor:
    Several letters to the editor have been published lately that go far beyond expressing the opinions of the writers on substantive issues, and instead personally and viciously attack elected officials who have different positions.
    I ran for office, not for political gain, but because I thought I could make a difference.
    I am sure most others run for the same reasons. The hours spent on town business are great, and the monetary reward practically nonexistent.

  • Great wife, cooking soothe worries

    To the editor:
    In a world that is fraught with turmoil, stress and uncertainty, it is so soothing that we have something we can count on.
    Marriage itself can be a gamble. I have a great wife, and without question I have perfect pasta.
    The Astros got Nolan Ryan, the Reds got Pete Rose, and I got Maria Quintano.
    She is descended from Sicilian parents. Her gift in the kitchen is she cannot cook a sub-standard meal.

  • Investigate records

    To the editor:
    Recently, the Beacon has published letters from Sunset Beach council members and Mayor Rich Cerrato regarding expenditures for a myriad of items.
    The amounts from both parties appear to be in direct conflict. Would it not be in the best public service interest for the Beacon to investigate public records to verify facts? Any discrepancies could then be reported to the citizens, our residents.
    In this election year, we have a right to know. Is it asking too much to expect fair and honorable journalism from a news organization?
