  • House Bill 725 ensures fairness

    To the editor:

House Bill 725 will raise the age of juvenile jurisdiction for misdemeanants. North Carolina is one of only two states that automatically prosecutes all 16- and 17-year-olds as adults, even for something as minor as stealing a bag of Doritos.

  • Remember Hewett with his dignity

    To the editor:

I wasn’t a big fan of ex-sheriff Ron Hewett, but I didn’t have anything against him, either. The last image I see of him is the altercation in jail. I could have done without that. The last time I saw him in person was at church, and he had dignity.

  • Sunset Beach budget ignores harsh reality

    To the editor:

Despite stern financial warnings by the Sunset Beach town administrator and taxpayer anger demonstrated at a recent community meeting, councilmen Lou De Vita, Mike Williams and Wilson Sherrill approved a $6 million budget, the largest in Sunset Beach history and 6.1 percent above last year. To avoid a major tax increase, they forecasted record revenues of $6 million, a 14.3 percent increase, which based on recent revenue trends, would take divine intervention to achieve.

  • Big bang doesn’t explain universe’s origin

    To the editor:

The one main thing the big bang does not explain is the origin of the universe. It is only a story about what supposedly happened afterwards. The only suggestion ever made is self-creation, which is illogical and absurd.

  • District 17 House update

    By Rep. Frank Iler

    Guest Columnist

There was a major announcement July 28 that an agreement had been reached on the budget. This is the budget bill, Senate Bill 744, Appropriations Act of 2014, that adjusts the biennial budget passed last year for the current year of 2014-15. Major adjustments had been made, and the bill had to be approved last week by the House and Senate and signed by the governor.

  • Finding joy and looking for pants in ‘summer heat’

It’s not often I start having a good time by 7 a.m. most days. I’ve found it’s best for everyone if I’m still in bed at that hour whenever possible. It’s best for everyone if I’m not around other people, either, at that hour. And it’s always best, at any hour, if I have plenty of personal space with room to move.

  • Thank you to local firefighters

    To the editor:

Impressed. Reassured. Grateful. This is how I have felt since watching firefighters grapple with the lightning-induced fire at Mariner’s Wacche condos in Brick Landing on Thursday night, July 24.

  • Keep proper high school colors

    To the editor:

Contrary to popular belief, black is not the new color for West Brunswick High School. There are only two official school colors: Kelly green and white. I know. I am a retired faculty member who was there the year the school opened, and I know what is on the school charter.
