Today's Opinions

  • Programs such as Head Start help kids get an early start on learning

We’ve had several stories and editorials lately about how many people in our community need help especially during the holidays.

This isn’t something new. There have always been people in our community who need a little extra assistance, especially families this time of year.

It reminds me to count my blessings because I was one of those kids myself.

  • Cyber Monday girl not up for the hassle that is Black Friday

I have always loved to watch game shows on TV, but I never expected to find myself in a real-life version.

One of my favorites was always “Supermarket Sweep.” Three teams took turns to guess the price of items and win 10 seconds to build up a lengthy sweep time. The big sweep, as it was called, was a free-for-all, where one person from each team tried to fill his or her shopping cart with the most expensive items in hopes of having the highest grocery bill at the end.

  • Do-it-yourself travel has its privileges

My idea of an ideal vacation used to involve air travel and a nice hotel.

Those were the good ol’ days, pre-dating terrorism plots posed by the likes of Osama bin Laden & Co., a murky economic outlook and a resurgence of bedbugs.

  • Don’t forget about town’s infrastructure

    To the editor:

Since the new bridge in Sunset Beach is complete and sewer construction is well under way, businesses and developers will be eager to resume building in our town once the economy recovers.

Although there isn’t anything wrong with a little progress, and it even may be welcomed in some cases, we need to make sure the growth of our quaint little community is controlled and according to our terms.

  • A spending cut by Congress

    To the editor:

There’s plenty of complaining about wasteful spending and a do-nothing government. That could be changed today if Congress was committed to doing its job. The majority of work has already been done for several pieces of legislation that are being held up for the ‘new Congress.’

  • What’s next for Obamacare?

    To the editor:

Have you gotten your waiver of the Obamacare requirements yet? You haven’t? Well, you better get hoppin’ before they’re all gone.

  • Organizers deserve an apology

    To the editor:

The Mannon C. Gore Bridge connecting the Sunset Beach mainland and island is now open. Our community had a fabulous dedication and reception on Oct. 1 as part of our Sunset at Sunset weekend. Then on Nov. l, hundreds of residents and neighbors from surrounding communities enjoyed a walk or ride over the new bridge. The sun was shining in a beautiful Carolina blue sky and there were smiling faces everywhere.

  • Be an informed voter in 2012

    To the editor:

A special thanks to the 730 voters that attended and those that watched the broadcast of the Alliance of Brunswick County Property Owners Association’s (ABCPOA) sponsored Meet the Candidates Night on Oct. 11.
