To the editor: In light of all the recent negativity surrounding the teachers at Jessie Mae Monroe Elementary School, I thought it would be nice for a change to hear the positive.

My name is Kimberly Southward. I have four children attending JMMES. My oldest, Hannah, has been there since the doors opened.

I’ll admit in that first year there were kinks to work out. I think that was completely understandable as it was the first year, but since then I have had no complaints about the school or its teachers.

To the editor: What’s the difference between a speed bump and a speed hump?

A bump is designed for cars traveling between 2-5 mph. A hump has a gentler design for vehicles moving from 5-10 mph. Speed humps are typically applied to residential streets where speed limits don’t exceed 25 miles per hour. Both are referred to as “traffic calming” methods.

The time has never been better to get out and enjoy events and places in Brunswick County. Whether you’re a full-time resident, a part-time resident, or a vacationer, you’ll quickly see there is much to do in our community.

While a number of businesses and entertainment groups put on some outstanding productions, some of the very best things to see and do here are events put on by a broad base of community volunteers. From theater productions and musicals to art shows and weekend festivals, from May until October, Brunswick County is hopping.
