Today's Opinions

  • Was offended by Richardson's comments

    To the editor:

I served with the 101st Airborne Division in Vietnam in 1965. I stepped on a land mine in September that year and lost the use of my right leg due to my injury. I’m writing about the article in the Beacon quoting Frank Richardson of VFW 7288 about Memorial Day.

The article did not sit well with me and a lot of other veterans that served in the military. I was a commander of a VFW post with 500 or so members for 7-8 years and a commander of an American Legion for two years.

  • Where will you go?

    To the editor:

  • Balloons return to Earth as litter

To the editor: I am concerned about several articles and photos appearing in The Brunswick Beacon over the past month. Our citizens are releasing balloons into the environment. I have seen these balloon releases mentioned to celebrate loved ones, milestones (birthdays, weddings), loved ones’ passing, and most recently, a Memorial Day event.

  • Thanks to Airport Commission

    To the editor:

Communities In Schools of Brunswick County, Inc. (CIS) would like to thank the Brunswick County Airport Commission for partnering with us for the second annual Big Toy Day on May 22.

We couldn’t have been more pleased with the turnout from the community. Local businesses and municipalities turned out with their “toys” and let the kids climb all over them.

  • Their popular characters will live on in our hearts

Children of the ’80s experienced a reality check the past few weeks as we experienced the passing of two childhood icons from our favorite TV shows.

Gary Coleman, diminutive star of “Diff’rent Strokes” and, unfortunately, washed-up-child-star punchline for most of his life, died of a brain hemorrhage at age 42 after a lifelong battle with kidney disease May 28 in Provo, Utah.

  • Voters deserve more than last-minute political maneuvering

What exactly is it state Sen. R.C. Soles Jr. believes he is doing?

Surely, he can’t believe most of his constituents think he is acting in the community’s best interest with the latest bills he has introduced in the General Assembly’s “short session.”

Remember, this is a time when he and fellow legislators are supposed to be considering only “non-controversial” bills.

  • Schools need community support

To the editor: I’d like to express how grateful Communities in Schools is for the community support reflected through Big Toy Day May 22.

The smiling faces of the many children and parents were beautiful. Your support for our fundraisers is greatly appreciated. We could not continue to provide services for children and families if not for your generosity.
