  • Supports healthcare reform

To the editor: I am appalled by the scare tactics being used by the opponents of healthcare reform. I would venture to guess many of those who oppose healthcare reform have health insurance provided by their employers or are fortunate enough to afford private insurance.

Millions of people in the U.S. aren’t as lucky. I keep hearing opponents insisting that healthcare should be left up to the private sector.

  • Have you been called?

To the editor: Have you been called? Jesus said, “Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door (to your heart), I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me.” Rev. 3:20.

Have you heard His voice? Maybe you are too busy?

  • Thanks for supporting education

To the editor: I am writing on behalf of the staff of Brunswick County Schools who benefited from the numerous staff development sessions at the Virginia Williamson Event Center on the campus of Brunswick Community College this summer.

The event center is an ideal training facility due to its location, comfort and caliber of space. The administration and staff are excellent to work with and are accommodating with the scheduling and preparation for our trainings.

  • Good luck to fire chief

To the editor: As president of the corporation of the Piney Grove Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department for more than four years and a member of the department for 13 years, it has been a tremendous honor and privilege to work with Chief Bork.

As we begin our search for a replacement, we, as a fire department, are reminded how much Randy has done for the department, its members and this community. The best tribute to his leadership and drive to make our department strong and active comes from the members of the department themselves.

  • A nation of fear?

I fear for the future of my country when a presidential address advocating hard work, ambitious goals and personal responsibility is considered too controversial and subversive for young ears.

I fear for the message the controversy sends to our youth. The president never deserves your respect if you don’t agree with him. Don’t honor a call to sacrifice if the commander in chief is of the opposite party. Never listen to anyone you disagree with.

  • 'Ponyo' is a feast for the eyes--of young and old alike

There was something so beautiful about the movie “Ponyo,” something I can’t adequately describe in words, but I’ll try my best.

The best way to sum up this take on The Little Mermaid and other such children’s tales is to call it a painting brought to life. It’s a moving work of art from master Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki, known for other animated masterpieces, such as “Spirited Away,” that also wowed American film lovers.

  • Claims against superintendent, school board cause for concern

If even some of the claims made by Brunswick County Schools former central office employee Sherry Dove are true, Brunswick Board of Education members should be concerned.

Among the many assertions made in the lawsuit against the district, including claims that Superintendent Katie McGee may have treated an employee improperly, is the claim the board gave Dove only one hour of a nine-hour closed session grievance hearing to present her side of the case.

  • Like things spooky, scary, paranormal and fun? This weekend event may be just for you

When I first met Patti Starr, she was a restaurant manager pursuing a life calling.

Starr told me in the first interview I did with her for The Kentucky Standard, that as a kid she saw things, like kids standing around her bed asking her questions. Her mother, she told me, used to tell her they were dreams, and sometimes dreams seemed real.

But Patti knew what she saw wasn’t a dream.
