Today's Opinions

  • Thank you, Brunswick County, for making this a beautiful place to call home

There’s a fortune from a cookie taped to the edge of my desk in the Beacon newsroom.

I cant remember how long it’s been there or when I put it there, but it seems appropriately fitting for my next adventure.

The fortune says, “Take the chance while you still have the choice.” And at the end of this week, that’s exactly what I’ll be doing.

  • Science builds upon itself

    To the editor:

Kathryn Jacewicz’s April 19 story on Brunswick County Commissioners’ attempt to wedge creationism into the educational fabric of the public school system is troubling for parents and students of Brunswick County.

  • Snakes on a road

    To the editor:

The warmer weather has started bringing out our local snakes onto roads and highways. What makes it so bad is that I have seen people purposely swerve to run over snakes.

  • Thanks for help with show

    To the editor:

Many thanks to everyone who helped make the annual car show a success. The proceeds raised will be used to help people in our area. Anyone interested in becoming a member of the car club can join at our monthly meeting at Planet Fun in Shallotte. We meet the first Thursday of every month at 6 p.m.

  • Against forced annexation

    To the editor:

This year, our state legislature has been working on bills to prohibit forced annexation. Across North Carolina, cities and towns have found themselves in financial trouble, often due to mismanagement of their current assets and tax base.

  • Don’t spend my money on park

    To the editor:

Despite petitions signed by more than 1,160 citizens so far to protest the purchase of 5.2 acres for a park, Sunset Beach Town Council has voted to try to renegotiate the purchase price of $3.4 million.

  • Upset about senior service changes

    To the editor:

I am personally inviting you, Mr. Michael David-Wilson, to take one hour of your workday to ride with me as I deliver Meals on Wheels.

  • Thanks for help with flea market

    To the editor:

The St. James Service Club would like to thank everyone from our surrounding communities for coming to the 13th annual St. James Service Club flea market on April 30 at Brunswick Community College.
