Today's Opinions

  • Church ignores the real issue

    To the editor:
St. Brendan the Navigator Church and its pastor have embarked on a campaign to ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines and to require law-abiding gun owners to carry liability insurance.
They don’t seem to care about our rights, and they conveniently forget about the separation of church and state. Ironically, in my 40-year police career, I saw a number of priests arrested but never saw a single law-abiding, gun-owning American (of which there are more than 80 million) arrested for committing a crime with a gun.

  • Who is our enemy? Resist the devil

    To the editor:
Who is our real enemy? Is it other people? Ephesians 6:12 “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.”
We are warned 1 Peter 5:8  Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.
Many Christians pray in the Lords prayer, “Deliver us from evil.”

  • Numbers don’t add up for sewer at Sunset

    To the editor:
1 just received my first utility bill since hooking into the Brunswick sewer system for $55.07. The 7 cents was for my water consumption. There was my usual charge of $11 or water base service charge and a new charge of $39 for waste water residential and $5 for grinder pump maintenance fee. This means if I don’t turn on one spigot or flush the toilet for a month, I’d still owe Brunswick County Public Utilities $55.

  • Adios, Farewell, Hugs

It is time to say good-bye.

I’m not leaving Brunswick County—I’m just beginning a new chapter in my career.

After nearly a decade of chasing the next big story, I am trading in my reporter’s notebook and pen to transition into a new phase.

As I look back over the career that chose me—I never planned to be a journalist—I have many favorite memories, fond experiences and special relationships I will forever cherish.

  • Government needs to steer clear of private lives

We had to shake our heads at a bill recently introduced by a North Carolina legislator.
State Sen. Austin Allran, a Republican from Hickory, was the primary sponsor of the Healthy Marriage Act, legislation that would make North Carolinians have to wait two years to finalize a divorce. There would also be mandatory counseling.
Currently, the waiting time is one year, which seems a fair amount of time.

  • ‘Cash in the car? It’s certainly not mine.’

We had to chuckle after reading a report about a traffic stop last week on I-85 near Lexington.
Davidson County Sheriff’s Office deputies stopped a 2005 Dodge truck on I-85 South for a traffic violation.
According to the sheriff’s office, the vehicle displayed California registration and was driven by Dennie Andy Keophimanh, 26, of Grand Prairie, Texas.

  • Teen Court impressive

    To the editor:
On March 26, I attended a Teen Court session at the Brunswick County Courthouse, open to the public, viewing teens who had been mentored and demonstrating skills prosecuting and/or defending other teens for various violations. It was live—a proceeding, open court. Both sides gave opening statements and after evidence, they gave closing statements and the judge gave his charge. Then a teen jury deliberated and gave its verdict. Observing these very polished events was remarkable.
