  • North Carolina versus South Carolina: Which is economic winner?

    Dr. Mike Walden

    Guest Columnist

North Carolina and South Carolina were once one — one colony that is — prior to our nation’s independence. Sometime around the late 1600s or early 1700s — historians differ on exactly when — the two colonies separated. Then, when the United States was formed, they become two states. There has been a rivalry ever since.

  • Pray for officers, those accused

    To the editor:

We have ongoing reports of police being shot while carrying out their regular duties, and just like any other group there are good and bad. Please pray for all law enforcement forces trying to keep us safe while we go about with our daily lives.

Pray also for those arrested, that all will be treated with justice, despite their race, age, gender and charges.

  • Thank you for school supply drive support

    To the editor:

Communities In Schools of Brunswick County (CIS) would like to thank all community members and businesses who supported our recent Back to School Supply Drive for students in need. The drive was very successful and resulted in many donations that have been distributed to children in local elementary and middle schools.

  • Writer ill informed on Calabash grant vote

    To the editor:

In response to the letter, “Ignorance destroys society, the Calabash community,” in the Aug. 20 edition, the synonym of ignorance is ill informed. The writer’s rant exhibits exactly that. She was not present at the meeting regarding the “no strings attached” grant, nor do I believe many other board meetings, if any. Clearly, her information came from a third party, someone who might just have his or her own agenda.

  • Sunset Beach tax explanation doesn’t add up

    To the editor:

I am a Sunset Beach taxpayer on fixed income. I just received my 53 percent tax rate increase changing the payment from 10.5 cents to $.16/$100 valuation. This is a 5.5-cent increase.

  • Resident teaches old squirrel new saxophone tricks

Things were starting to get squirrelly in John Goss’ backyard.

It was obvious the day Sammy, one of the black-and-gray fox squirrels that reside at Sandpiper Golf & Country Club, showed up at Goss’ home overlooking the first hole of the community’s Piper course.

“I started seeing the squirrel here, so I started putting peanuts in the yard,” said the former U.S. Department of Defense employee, who has been retired for 20 years, the past 13 of them in Sunset Beach.

  • Did you have a memorable moment this summer?

Watching wide receivers go down with knee injuries each week of the NFL preseason has sent me a pretty clear message.

I should never have joined a fantasy football league. I don’t know what I was thinking.

No, what I meant to say was it’s clear that summer is coming to an end. The signs are there.

The fantasy drafts are coming. The college football Top 20 lists are out. Just the other day I heard someone say she was looking forward to the return of pumpkin spice flavors in … everything.
