Today's Opinions

  • USA is a nation 'under God'

    To the editor:

John Trumbull’s painting, “Declaration of Independence,” represents our nation’s “road to rebellion” and the courageous stand against the tyranny of an unjust ruler, our eventual victory and the formation of this great country, the United States of America.

No other time in history has the creator so clearly selected and placed such rare men of wisdom together for such a glorious cause: the beautiful words of our declaration divinely inspired.

  • Stop trashing golf community

    To the editor:

After many years of neglect by the previous owner, the new owners and staff of Carolina Shores Golf Course are working hard to bring the course back to its former glory — and it is an uphill battle primarily because of golfers and the property owners.

  • Carolina Shores board acted properly

    To the editor:

Say it ain’t so: We have yet another disgruntled ex-commissioner from the community of Carolina Shores. Sure didn’t take long for this one to turn to the dark side, especially since she was party to so many positive changes in the town during her tenure.

  • Credit former mayor, NCDOT for Shallotte landscaping

    To the editor:

In the last several weeks I have received numerous compliments on the landscaping the North Carolina Department of Transportation installed recently on Main Street in Shallotte.

I want all to know this landscape is the result of the work of former Shallotte Mayor Sara McCullough who convinced Department of Transportation to take on this project. This is just one example of the work Sara did during her many years of service to Shallotte to improve Shallotte’s appearance.

  • Parker, Scott, Lewis show integrity in Sunset Beach

    To the editor:

First, kudos to new Sunset Beach Town Administrator Susan Parker for quickly identifying the apparent dubious reporting practices by the former town administrator, who was repeatedly praised by the council and reportedly left the area for a new position, earning $41,000 per year less.

  • Proof of Christ

    To the editor:

1 Corinthians 15: “But if there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ is not risen. And if Christ is not risen, then our preaching is empty and your faith is also empty. If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men the most pitiable.” What is the evidence?

  • Washington reps aren’t doing what’s best for us

    To the editor:

If all the people who represent us in Washington, D.C., could get together and trade the Internal Revenue Service for the Fair Tax, we wouldn’t be having this conversation with newly appointed IRS chief John Koskinen.

And if those same representatives really wanted to help the veterans who are waiting for medical help, they would send them to hospitals in their own hometowns instead of letting them be on a waiting list.

  • District 8 Senate update

    By Sen. Bill Rabon

    Guest Columnist

The 2014 short session continues to be nothing short of eventful, and we are working hard in order to accomplish our goals.

    Closing all coal ash ponds

I am proud to report the Senate passed an aggressive plan for coal ash mitigation that will give North Carolina the strictest regulations on coal ash in the country and make it the first state to force closure of all coal ash ponds.
