Smart Start celebrates 20th...

Smart Start of Brunswick County hosted a barbecue Thursday at its office on Sellers Street in Shallotte to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Smart Start.

The staff served barbecue and sides and organized games for children.

According to Smart Start of Brunswick County executive director Linda Gironda, the staff had wanted to host a community event.

Southport woman sues funeral...

A Southport woman has filed a lawsuit against a local funeral home.

The lawsuit was filed on May 20 at the Brunswick County Courthouse by Jennifer Dunn against Peacock Newnam Funeral Home, White Funeral Services, Gregory L. White, Delores H. White and Shawna Sanders.

Attorney Patrick Mincey of Wilmington is representing Dunn.

The word made the world

To the editor:
Jesus was referred to as the word of God and maker of all things. In the beginning was the word, and the word was with God, and the word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him nothing was made.
For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.

Inlet has breath-taking beauty,...

It looks like a place where peaceful waters flow.
Instead, it’s a place where deadly waters flow.
A tourist from Ohio drowned in the Lockwood Folly Inlet last Tuesday. The 21-year-old man was trying to swim from the east end of Holden Beach across to the west end of Oak Island (Long Beach).
The inlet—about 300 yards wide— separates those two islands and connects the Atlantic Ocean to the Intracoastal Waterway.

Sunset Beach party great...

To the editor:
What a wonderful 50-year celebration the town of Sunset Beach had on the beach this past Saturday. It was nice to see all the improvements at the gazebo and to have the opportunity to enjoy such a nice meal while enjoying the crowds on such a perfect day. So glad we live here!

Fire all involved in IRS scandal

To the editor:
Now it should be clear to all that the Obama administration has been on a rampage of intimidation, smearing, investigating and financially damaging every political opponent.
Early in 2010, President Obama began deriding conservative groups as “tea baggers,” and vice president Joe Biden compared them to terrorists. In case the IRS missed the point, Obama raised the threat of illegality when he said there are groups with harmless-sounding names that are running millions of dollars of ads against Democrat candidates.
