‘Tammy’: The reel deal

Last week, traffic on Main Street slowed to a crawl as people tried to get a look at the hustle-and-bustle outside The Grille. Despite all the work going on outside, the restaurant was not open. The sign simply read “closed for Tammy.”

For anyone who may be wondering exactly who “Tammy” is, she is the main character in a movie of the same name.

Family of Ryan Dilworth...

The second  “Buckle Up for Ryan” motorcycle ride June 1 raised funds to bring distracted driving awareness into high schools.

Ryan Chase Dilworth, 17, of Supply died April 21, 2012, in a single-car accident on Stanbury Road.

The West Brunswick High School junior ran off the road, overcorrected, crossed the centerline and flipped his SUV.

North Carolina Highway Patrol troopers said he was not wearing his seat belt.

Leland mayor and family offer...

Mayor Brenda Bozeman stepped away from her seat on town council last month for one issue that was too close to her heart.

Bozeman recused herself from a board decision because her family has offered to donate land to the town.

The property is at 158 S. Navassa Road in Leland on the Cape Fear River.

“It’s where my mom lived the last 40-plus years after she remarried,” Bozeman said, adding the blended family included 15 children. Bozeman is the youngest of six siblings. Her stepfather, C.J. Dilda, had nine children.

When the West Brunswick High School Class of 2013 graduates this Saturday, one proud mom seated in the audience will be especially grateful.

Christine Muniz is thankful she’ll be able to see 18-year-old daughter Megan graduate after suffering a life-threatening asthma/allergy attack at her Shallotte Point home during the early-morning hours of June 2.

Muniz and her family credit Megan for rushing to her mother’s aid, using CPR skills she was taught at a Saturday class last December to help save Muniz’s life.

Oak Island native helps seniors...

When one thinks of yoga, he or she often pictures a room full of young, limber people twisting their bodies into positions called “cat pose” and “downward dog.”

But Beverly Weinstein’s classes are different. Because her focus is on relaxation and stretching, she calls her practice “Ageless Yoga.”

Weinstein’s parents built a house on Oak Island in the ’60s. She grew up in Brunswick County and attended Southport High School.

Visitors should read the signs

To the editor:
It was interesting to read the latest letter from someone feeling they were mistreated at the Sunset Pier parking lot.
The writer indicated that the free parking lot was closed, which it was. She went on to say that they pulled into the Sunset Pier parking lot, and there was not an attendant on duty to collect the parking fee. This is quite possible since the attendant is not always present.

Economic expert offers aid in...

CAROLINA SHORES—The Brunswick County Economic Development Commission is willing to help the town of Carolina Shores lure more businesses into town.

That’s what Jim Bradshaw, director of the BCEDC, told the town board of commissioners at its monthly workshop Monday.

Bradshaw distributed copies of a handout and told board members he’d be glad to try to answer any questions they might have.

Sheriff's office to provide...

The Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office is not releasing any more information regarding the death of a 4-month-old baby in Shallotte last week.

Sheriff’s office spokeswoman Emily Flax said this week Sheriff John Ingram stated his office would not be providing any more information about the case due to its sensitive nature.

Randy Lee Richardson II, 19, of 1515 Pelican Place in Shallotte, was brought into custody at 1:45 a.m. last Wednesday, June 5, on a charge of murder of 4-month-old Colton Tillman Richardson.
