Some rules have gotten ridiculous

To the editor:
A high school student athlete, anchoring a 4-by-100-yard track race, crosses the finish line a clear seven yards ahead of all competitors, and then raises his index finger to heaven, a gesture so often repeated by professional athletes and others in a thankful acknowledgment of divine assistance. The gesture is ruled a violation of rules for excessive celebration. The team is disqualified. The race was a qualifier for the state championships.

Blues and crabs in Little River...

LITTLE RIVER, S.C.—Get ready for crabs, crafters and crooners.

The 32nd Annual Blue Crab Festival is set for this weekend just south of the border in Little River, S.C.

Scheduled 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, the award-winning festival traditionally showcases all-day entertainment and an array of food and arts-and-crafts booths lining the Little River waterfront the weekend after Mother’s Day.

Other events at the “biker-friendly festival” include a children’s area and activities.

Community rallies around...

A May 7 fire destroyed a family’s home in the Ash community, but the community is pulling the family from the ashes.

The Waccamaw Fire Department received an alarm at 8:59 p.m. for the fire at 2358 Butler Circle.

The fire was in the home of two of the department’s firefighters, Jeffrey and Janice Milligan, Waccamaw assistant fire chief Jason Coveyou said.

 MOREHEAD CITY—The Brunswick Community College baseball team beat Lenoir Community College 9-5 Monday night, winning the Region 10 championship series and advancing for the first time to the NJCAA Division II World Series May 25-June 1 in Enid, Okla.

Answer to woes is Jesus Christ

To the editor:
Nuclear war, biological war, destruction of our electronic grid, economic collapse, and widespread terrorist attacks are just some of the ways widespread devastation in the U.S. is possible. Any one of these could result in martial law, gun confiscation, no food, no purified water, and no available money.

Heroes of our youth take us on...

It’s not often that you see a governor turn back into a 17-year-old kid.
But that’s what happened last Thursday night when Gov. Pat McCrory spoke at the 50th North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame banquet in the Raleigh Convention Center.
Making impromptu remarks, McCrory said the main reason he came was because the 1974 N.C. State team was being honored for producing one of the greatest moments in the state’s sports history: the ACC Tournament win over Maryland.

Governor asks for flags to be...

North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory has ordered all state flags to be lowered to half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Friday, May 10, in honor of N.C. Senator Calvin Coolidge Murrow. Senator Murrow passed away on April 30. A memorial service will be held in his honor on Saturday, May 11, in Southport.

Cook throws 1-hitter in playoff...

 The West Brunswick softball team beat Triton 2-0 Friday in Shallotte in a first round game of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Class 3A state playoffs.

West (15-6) will play at Nash Central (19-1) on Tuesday (too late for this edition).

Senior Kim Cook pitched a one-hitter. She walked two batters and hit a batter. She struck out seven.

The Trojans scored their winning runs in the bottom of the fifth.

 The West Brunswick baseball team beat South Johnston 5-2 Friday in Shallotte in a first round game of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Class 3A state playoffs.

Starter Ryan Caison struck out seven batters in four-plus innings and Landon Tilley struck out eight in three innings.

‘Iron Man 3’ brings acclaim to...

“Iron Man 3,” filmed 45 miles up the road in Wilmington, just took in the second-highest dollar figures ever for a movie’s opening.
The latest installment in the Iron Man series opened taking in a colossal $175.3 million, making it second only to 2012’s “The Avengers.” That movie was the predecessor in Marvel Studios’ ongoing series of superhero movies, which took in $207.4 million last year.
