The phone rang late in the evening with the voice on the other end saying, “I have live shrimp.” It was just the kind of phone call I needed to give my clients and me a great chance at finding a tournament-winning redfish in the Fisherman’s Post Flounder Tournament.
Scott Rivers, Deana Rivers and nephew Jackson Simpson got on a red-hot redfish bite with me Saturday morning. The problem we had was landing the right size fish. We had several fish that were too large to handle, breaking our lines and pulling the hooks on several upper slot reds.

Local author David Manning will be at Hickmans Crossroads Library, 1040 Calabash Road, at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 13, to discuss his latest mystery, “Dead Letters,” based in Sunset Beach.

Manning’s fiction and non-fiction work has appeared in dozens of literary magazines and newspapers. His radio play, “Self Image,” was produced for National Public Radio by the Radio Repertory Company, and he collaborated with composer Michael Ching on a narrated musical satire commissioned by the 1987 U.S. Olympic Festival.

 The details of 22-year-old Terneil Rhodes’ final hours on Sept. 8, 2011, the day he was shot and killed in Petersburg, Va., are as brief as a summer afternoon shower.

But when Rhodes was a basketball player and a student at Brunswick Community College, from the fall of 2008 to the spring of 2011, he was a friend to many people, and they have enduring thoughts about him.

Brunswick County native CC Martin is bringing his brand of country to three stages of this year’s countywide summer concert series.

Martin’s next performance is at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, June 16, on the Pavilion stage at the end of Jordan Boulevard in Holden Beach.

Martin also performs July 3 in Sunset Beach and Aug. 22 in Calabash. He’ll also be performing at this summer’s North Carolina Fourth of July Festival in his hometown of Southport.
