Lady Trojans lose in first round...

 The West Brunswick High School girls’ soccer season ended May 8 in Shallotte in a 3-0 loss to C.B. Aycock in the first round of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Class 3A state playoffs.

West finishes 12-5-1. C.B. Aycock is 14-6 and plays either Wilson Hunt (16-2) or Washington (8-10) in the second round.

The game started badly for the Trojans. Defender Gracie Baxley was injured 2 minutes, 6 seconds into the game and remained sidelined for the rest of the game.

Sunset Beach police arrest man...

SUNSET BEACH—A 22-year-old man has been arrested after local police tracked him with a stolen cell phone.

Daniel Castillo, 22, of 24 Boundary Loop Road in the Carolina Shores North community, was charged May 2.

Sunset Beach Police Det. Woody Dunn said an Android phone was reported stolen that same day from the counter of the Market Express store on Seaside Road.

The phone’s owner had placed the phone on the counter when it was stolen.

To the editor:
I met Claude “Sarge” Suggs at a bar named Dockers 20 years ago when I moved here from Atlanta. He was the 63-year-old security man with the broken arm whose cast was an equalizer when handling rowdy patrons. It was only broken Thursday through Saturday.

‘Iron Man 3’ brings acclaim to...

“Iron Man 3,” filmed 45 miles up the road in Wilmington, just took in the second-highest dollar figures ever for a movie’s opening.
The latest installment in the Iron Man series opened taking in a colossal $175.3 million, making it second only to 2012’s “The Avengers.” That movie was the predecessor in Marvel Studios’ ongoing series of superhero movies, which took in $207.4 million last year.

 One of these days...

This is one of those weeks when it’s tough to be a fishing report columnist. It’s supposed to be the time of year when the fishing is at its best and I’m full of reports and fish stories from inshore to offshore. Instead I’m going to sound like a broken record poormouthing the rotten weather we’ve been experiencing.

West beats South in softball

 BOILING SPRING LAKES—The West Brunswick softball team beat South Brunswick 7-1 May 1 in the final conference game of the season.

West scored five runs in the top of the sixth in the victory. A home run by Ariana Thomas scored West’s first run in the inning. Sam Smith walked, advanced a base on Leilani Emile’s sacrifice bunt and scored on Ashley Smith’s hit. Nicole Phillips followed with a hit, driving in a run. A hit by Bre Small drove in the final run.

Patient grateful for hospital...

To the editor:
Earlier this month, I was a patient at Brunswick Novant Medical Center.
The care that I received was done professionally and with much care and kindness. I am very happy that this hospital is now available to offer such care.

BCC advances for first time to...

 MOREHEAD CITY—The Brunswick Community College baseball team beat Lenoir Community College 9-5 Monday night, winning the Region 10 championship series and advancing for the first time to the NJCAA Division II World Series May 25-June 1 in Enid, Okla.

Carolina Shores recycles ideas

CAROLINA SHORES—The town is recycling ideas to get residents more interested in recycling.

“Our goal as a group is to get more recycling going on,” town commissioner Joyce Dunn said at the town board of commissioners’ monthly workshop Monday.

Increased interest on the part of citizens isn’t going to happen in a “huge chunk,” Dunn said.

She suggested they focus on doing a couple of a things a year that would make a difference of sparking residents’ interest.

Cook throws 1-hitter in playoff...

 The West Brunswick softball team beat Triton 2-0 Friday in Shallotte in a first round game of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Class 3A state playoffs.

West (15-6) will play at Nash Central (19-1) on Tuesday (too late for this edition).

Senior Kim Cook pitched a one-hitter. She walked two batters and hit a batter. She struck out seven.

The Trojans scored their winning runs in the bottom of the fifth.
