I met Claude “Sarge” Suggs at a bar named Dockers 20 years ago when I moved here from Atlanta. He was the 63-year-old security man with the broken arm whose cast was an equalizer when handling rowdy patrons. It was only broken Thursday through Saturday.

SUNSET BEACH—A 22-year-old man has been arrested after local police tracked him with a stolen cell phone.

Daniel Castillo, 22, of 24 Boundary Loop Road in the Carolina Shores North community, was charged May 2.

Sunset Beach Police Det. Woody Dunn said an Android phone was reported stolen that same day from the counter of the Market Express store on Seaside Road.

The phone’s owner had placed the phone on the counter when it was stolen.

 The West Brunswick High School girls’ soccer season ended May 8 in Shallotte in a 3-0 loss to C.B. Aycock in the first round of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Class 3A state playoffs.

West finishes 12-5-1. C.B. Aycock is 14-6 and plays either Wilson Hunt (16-2) or Washington (8-10) in the second round.

The game started badly for the Trojans. Defender Gracie Baxley was injured 2 minutes, 6 seconds into the game and remained sidelined for the rest of the game.

CAROLINA SHORES—The town is recycling ideas to get residents more interested in recycling.

“Our goal as a group is to get more recycling going on,” town commissioner Joyce Dunn said at the town board of commissioners’ monthly workshop Monday.

Increased interest on the part of citizens isn’t going to happen in a “huge chunk,” Dunn said.

She suggested they focus on doing a couple of a things a year that would make a difference of sparking residents’ interest.
