BEMC offers $5,000 reward for power-outage vandalism

Brunswick Electric Membership Corporation is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person(s) responsible for breaking into the BEMC Hickmans Crossing substation in Calabash and committing vandalism that resulted in a power outage.

About 3,600 co-op members in the Calabash area were without power from 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 31, to 12:20 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 1, as a result of the vandalism.

Judge denies Warren’s request for injunction

BOLIVIA—Superior Court Judge Jack Hooks on Wednesday denied Brunswick County Commissioner Charles Warren’s request for an injunction to stop a hearing to remove Warren from the county’s Department of Social Services board.

Hooks’ order, filed at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Brunswick County Superior Court, allows county commissioners to legally proceed with the removal process. The order also nullified a temporary restraining order preventing the hearing.

Sea Trail reorganization plan proposes selling assets

SUNSET BEACH—A proposed reorganization plan for Sea Trail Golf Resort and Convention Center cites details about selling assets at the resort.

The intent of the plan, submitted Jan. 26 in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Wilmington, is outlined by Matthew Smith, managing director with The Finley Group Inc. of Charlotte, described as an advisory firm for “operationally challenged organizations.”

Sheriff’s detectives search for missing Shallotte man

Update: Stephen Jeffery Stutts was found in Supply on Monday. He has returned to his residence.

Detectives with the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office are searching for a missing Shallotte man.

Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Sgt. Del Routh said detectives are searching for Stephen Jeffery Stutts, 25, of Shallotte, who has been missing since Friday, Jan. 13.

Judge to rule on DSS board member’s removal hearing this week

BOLIVIA—Superior Court Judge Jack Hooks will decide by Wednesday afternoon if Brunswick County Commissioners have the legal authority to remove commissioner Charles Warren from the county’s Department of Social Services board.

Hooks heard arguments from Brunswick County Attorney Huey Marshall and Warren’s attorney Gary Shipman for about an hour Monday afternoon. Hooks said he would have a ruling by the end of the business day Wednesday.

Daniel Bruce Faircloth, 58, of Ocean Isle Beach, died on Saturday, Jan. 28, 2012.
He was born on Dec. 1, 1953, a son of the late Pete C. Faircloth and Myrtle E. Faircloth.
Surviving are his wife, Carol M. Faircloth of the home; his children, Danielle, Daniel, Brandon and Kevin; and two brothers, Michael and Stephen.
A celebration of life service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb.4, at the Breath of Life Church.

Brunswick County residents journeyed to Raleigh this week to push for legislative reform regarding homeowners associations.

Ole Madsen, a resident of Oyster Harbour at Holden Beach, was among those who spoke Monday at a state House hearing.

Middle school wrestling tourney at West Brunswick High School

 West Brunswick High School was host to the annual middle school and junior varsity wrestling tournaments on Saturday, the last tournaments before the conference championships. These are the top-two county finishers in each weight class, as recorded on the scoresheets (full names unavailable for all wrestlers):

West JV boys’ basketball team improves to 14-2

 The West junior varsity boys’ basketball team improved to 10-1 in the conference and 14-2 overall by routing South Columbus 51-28 Friday.

Eleven Trojans scored in the victory. O.J. Hill was the top scorer with 12 points.

West trailed in the first quarter, but Saadiq Johnson hit a 3-pointer from the corner to cut the Stallions’ lead to 15-12. Johnson then hit a 3-pointer early in the second quarter, giving West a 20-17 lead. The Trojans outscored the Stallions 12-4 in the quarter and led 26-19 at the half.
