Commissioners deserve praise

To the editor:
On May 6, county commissioners proclaimed May as Mental Health Month. Hooray. What an outstanding group of leaders we have to recognize the importance of standing up in support of mental health when so many individuals stick their heads in the sand and are afraid to discuss the subject as taboo.

Yarbrough wins second race of season at Myrtle Beach

Sam Yarbrough won his second straight race Saturday at Myrtle Beach Speedway in the NASCAR Whelen All-America Series.
Driving for owner Chad McCumbee, Yarbrough fought off the challenges of Darlington’s Jamie Weatherford and current track champion Anthony Anders.  
Yarbrough’s two victories give him the points lead as he seeks a second Myrtle Beach Speedway championship. Following Yarbrough to the checkered flag were Weatherford, Anders, Bobbie June, Barry Andrews.  

Dornfield-Stephenson

Sarah Marie Dornfeld of Shallotte and Bryan Maynard Stephenson of Raleigh were married March 2 at historical First Baptist Church on Market Street in Wilmington.
Pastor Donald Sandburg officiated the ceremony.
The bride is the daughter of Art and Diana Dornfeld of Shallotte.
The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert E. Stephenson Jr. of Raleigh.
The bride was given in marriage by her parents.

Versatile, dry onion soup mix is more than just an onion dip

Mixing sour cream with one of those dry onion soup mix envelopes was a staple at parties at our house for years. It was a cheap and easy way to make a pretty darn good dip. And, with a bag of nacho chips and a bottle of wine, the dip would make the occasion festive.
Then one day, I read the label on the onion soup mix envelope. The company suggested mixing its onion soup with ground beef for an onion meatloaf. It really added some zest to it. I decided to ask some friends what they used it in.

Patient grateful for hospital care

To the editor:
Earlier this month, I was a patient at Brunswick Novant Medical Center.
The care that I received was done professionally and with much care and kindness. I am very happy that this hospital is now available to offer such care.

Milliken gets first victory of season

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.—Saturday night racing appeared to be a washout, with rain falling most of the day along the Grand Strand. The rain started clearing at 6 p.m. and track-drying efforts were completed and practice started at 7:20 p.m. Euro-style qualifying hastened the program and the fields were set in what turned out to be a great night of racing.

Hensley wins two matches in Campbell tourney

Former West Brunswick golfer Greg Hensley played for the South in the 10th annual North South Tournament April 19-21 at Keith Hills Golf Club in Buies Creek. Hensley is enrolled in the PGA Golf Management program at Campbell University.
The three-day tournament was the last event of the 2013 Spring Semester Tournament Series. Forty-six golf students and two golf instructors were divided in foursomes. North won the tourney.

Lakewood breaking-and-entering suspect arrested

Jacob Tyler Cortes, 17, of Styron’s Landing Road, Supply, who was wanted by Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office investigators, was arrested May 8.

BCSO officers were searching for Cortes in connection with several breaking-and-enterings and larcenies that took place April 23 in Shallotte off Green Heron Drive in the Lakewood area.

Cortes was charged with two felony counts of breaking-and-entering a motor vehicle, one felony count of breaking-and-entering and two counts of misdemeanor larceny.

Holden Beach West may solve guardhouse problem with automated gate

Holden Beach won’t rebuild the West End guard shack that controlled traffic into the private community, but town staff has pointed the property owners association in the right direction.

After the guardhouse at the entrance of Holden Beach West was destroyed in a January traffic accident, residents began attending town meetings to ask about assistance to replace the building.

“Every time we’ve come to town hall, no one is able to help us solve our problem,” Ray Compton of 1317 Ocean Blvd. said at the March town meeting.

Ex-Trojan Gause pitching for Walters State

 Former West Brunswick pitcher Jay Gause finished the regular season 7-5 with a 3.34 ERA for Walters State Community College, an NJCAA Division I team. Gause, a sophomore, pitched 72.2 innings, third most on the team, and averaged 10 strikeouts a game.

Walters State is 35-16. It is 18-1 at its home field in Morristown, Tenn.
