Drowning victim’s body recovered; town considering warning sign

A drowning death in the Lockwood Folly Inlet may lead to Holden Beach erecting a warning sign on the beach where the accident occurred.

The body of the Ohio man who drowned while visiting Holden Beach was recovered early Sunday morning, May 19.

Kwesi Sample, 21, a member of the Xenos Christian Fellowship of Columbus, Ohio, a group that has visited Holden Beach for several years, drowned May 14 while attempting to swim the Lockwood Folly Inlet from Holden Beach to Oak Island.

Now it should be clear to all that the Obama administration has been on a rampage of intimidation, smearing, investigating and financially damaging every political opponent.
Early in 2010, President Obama began deriding conservative groups as “tea baggers,” and vice president Joe Biden compared them to terrorists. In case the IRS missed the point, Obama raised the threat of illegality when he said there are groups with harmless-sounding names that are running millions of dollars of ads against Democrat candidates.

More arrests in BSL prostitution case include officer, volunteer firefighter

A prostitution investigation in Boiling Spring Lakes has lead to charges against a police officer and volunteer firefighter.

In early May, Boiling Spring Lakes Police Chief Brad Shirley said his department began a complex investigation involving advertisements for prostitution on the Internet via different social medial websites.

That lead to Kyle Bradley Wolf, 20, 1911 Robin Road, Boiling Spring Lakes, and Shawn Christopher Conley, 20, North Twin Lakes Drive, Southport, each being charged with two counts of promoting prostitution of a minor.

Brunswick 2013-14 budget presented Monday night

County Manager Ann Hardy summed up the 2013-14 budget proposal with the message: NO PROPERTY TAX RATE INCREASE.

It was included on a PowerPoint slide that filled the screen behind county commissioners, summarizing the budget with $201.8 million, $0.4425 cents, 95.04 percent collection rate, 1 cent=$2,351,329.

“Can I use that as a screensaver?” Commissioner Marty Cooke asked after Hardy put up the summary page.

Memorial Day services will remember those who serve

Upcoming Memorial Day services will pay tribute to veterans and soldiers both past and present. The Shallotte Middle School KEYS (Keeping Every Youth Successful) program will observe Memorial Day at 9 a.m. Friday, May 24, at the school football field or, if it rains, in the school gym. Guest speakers include Congressman Mike McIntyre, Sheriff John Ingram, Capt. Fred Gore and Paul Price (Sgt. Major Retired - USMC). There will be special music from Brunswick County Sheriff’s Deputy Ken Medlin, and the Shallotte Middle School Band will perform.

County board skips manager search, selects Hardy

Brunswick County commissioners called off their search for a new county manager Monday night.

Two weeks was all they needed to decide Ann Hardy is all they need.

Board members had just elevated the finance director to interim manager at the May 6 county meeting, after Hardy had served a month-and-a-half as special assistant to former county manager Marty Lawing to get up to speed on county needs before he left to be Guilford County’s manager.

Commissioners to give county employees pay raises

Commissioners chose a method to reclassify county jobs and institute pay increases, but the process won’t be finalized until the new fiscal year.

The county hired Evergreen Solutions in July 2012 to review compensation, job classifications, performance evaluations and benefits for all county employees.

The county received Evergreen’s initial recommendations in January and spent the past five months tailoring the plan.

Leland proposes $1 inspection fees to attract growth

Leland’s financial plan for 2013-14 is willing to risk the status quo to draw in business and developers.

Town Manager David Hollis presented the budget message to commissioners May 16, announcing town officials plan to reduce building permit fees “dramatically” to just $1.

“We can use building inspection service as (public relations) for the town and invite builders into the town,” Hollis said. “Building permits would be essentially free.”

New sidewalk rolling out in fall in Calabash

CALABASH—Construction on new town sidewalks is expected to get under way in early fall, Calabash Mayor Mary Knight said at the town board of commissioners meeting May 14.

Town commissioner Charles “Buddy” Walton also read a statement at the meeting conveying all facts had to be weighed before the board acted to approve construction at a specially called meeting April 16.

Beach Boys tickets catching fast wave

Tickets are selling briskly for The Beach Boys' upcoming debut concert in Brunswick County.

Tickets for the Aug. 29 concert at Odell Williamson Auditorium at Brunswick Community College went on sale Monday.

Auditorium manager Mike Sapp said Tuesday there were only about six remaining VIP tickets, but otherwise still plenty of really good tickets available for the upcoming performance featuring Beach Boys veterans Mike Love and Bruce Johnston.

Sapp is anticipating a concert sell-out and advises buying tickets now.
