North Brunswick rallies, forces third game in regional

 LELAND—In the second game of the Class 2A East Regional baseball series Saturday, North Brunswick rallied from a 5-0 deficit in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie Northwood and then won the game on Tyler Barnes’ two-out triple in the seventh.

North had to win to force a third game, which will be played Monday at Northwood. The winner advances to the state championship series.

Science Olympiad very impressive

o the editor:
I want to congratulate all participants of the first annual Science Olympiad for elementary school students of Brunswick County. The event was at Cedar Grove Elementary, and they were a most gracious host.

Commissioners deserve praise

To the editor:
On May 6, county commissioners proclaimed May as Mental Health Month. Hooray. What an outstanding group of leaders we have to recognize the importance of standing up in support of mental health when so many individuals stick their heads in the sand and are afraid to discuss the subject as taboo.

Commissioners to give county employees pay raises

Commissioners chose a method to reclassify county jobs and institute pay increases, but the process won’t be finalized until the new fiscal year.

The county hired Evergreen Solutions in July 2012 to review compensation, job classifications, performance evaluations and benefits for all county employees.

The county received Evergreen’s initial recommendations in January and spent the past five months tailoring the plan.

CIS hosts fifth annual Big Toy Day

SOUTHPORT—Trucks, planes, cars and trains took center stage as Communities In Schools of Brunswick County hosted Big Toy Day at the Cape Fear Regional Jetport last Saturday.

About 1,400 people attended the fifth annual Big Toy Day. More than 70 exhibitors participated, including the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office, the Oak Island Police Department, Yaupon Beach Fire Department, Oak Island Fire and Rescue and the U.S. Coast Guard.

Leland proposes $1 inspection fees to attract growth

Leland’s financial plan for 2013-14 is willing to risk the status quo to draw in business and developers.

Town Manager David Hollis presented the budget message to commissioners May 16, announcing town officials plan to reduce building permit fees “dramatically” to just $1.

“We can use building inspection service as (public relations) for the town and invite builders into the town,” Hollis said. “Building permits would be essentially free.”

Do this in memory of me: a Memorial Day inspiration

Churchgoers in major Christian denominations may be familiar with these words as part of their communion rites. The words strike me as particularly powerful ones. They are words that prod us in many areas of life, areas that are truly ones that empower communion—union with each other in our common humanity.
Memorial Day is an especially precious time to hear, heed and attend to that command.

Looks can be deceiving; would sign prevent another tragic drowning?

Since I’m not from here, last week’s drowning in the Lockwood Folly Inlet was the first of its kind I’ve covered for a newspaper.

I have covered the unexpected, including a child who drowned during a quick and heavy rainstorm. He tried to save his basketball from floating away in a shallow ditch and was knocked off his feet by the fast-running water and pulled into a driveway culvert.

County board skips manager search, selects Hardy

Brunswick County commissioners called off their search for a new county manager Monday night.

Two weeks was all they needed to decide Ann Hardy is all they need.

Board members had just elevated the finance director to interim manager at the May 6 county meeting, after Hardy had served a month-and-a-half as special assistant to former county manager Marty Lawing to get up to speed on county needs before he left to be Guilford County’s manager.

Drowning victim’s body recovered; town considering warning sign

A drowning death in the Lockwood Folly Inlet may lead to Holden Beach erecting a warning sign on the beach where the accident occurred.

The body of the Ohio man who drowned while visiting Holden Beach was recovered early Sunday morning, May 19.

Kwesi Sample, 21, a member of the Xenos Christian Fellowship of Columbus, Ohio, a group that has visited Holden Beach for several years, drowned May 14 while attempting to swim the Lockwood Folly Inlet from Holden Beach to Oak Island.
