Sheriff's Office looking for two missing teens

The Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office is looking for two missing teens.

According to the report, Kayla Elizabeth Ray and Christien Aurianna Smith are believed to have gotten into a vehicle and left South Brunswick Middle School this morning at about 7:45 a.m. No description of the vehicle or driver is available at this time.

Ray, 13, is a student at South Brunswick Middle School, and is 5 feet 1 inch tall and weighs about 145 pounds. She was last seen at South Brunswick Middle School.

Drowning victim’s body recovered; town considering warning sign

A drowning death in the Lockwood Folly Inlet may lead to Holden Beach erecting a warning sign on the beach where the accident occurred.

The body of the Ohio man who drowned while visiting Holden Beach was recovered early Sunday morning, May 19.

Kwesi Sample, 21, a member of the Xenos Christian Fellowship of Columbus, Ohio, a group that has visited Holden Beach for several years, drowned May 14 while attempting to swim the Lockwood Folly Inlet from Holden Beach to Oak Island.

Sluggish backwater bite

The backwaters surrounding the Ocean Isle Beach area have not been producing the kind of action expected for this time of year.
The flounder bite has been on and off with only a few good fish biting a hook. Red drum and black drum have gotten picky in their feeding habits. Trout seem to be spread all over the place, making them hard to target. I can only speculate that the back-and-forth weather patterns have continued to play a role in making our resident fish sluggish and slowing down the flow of migrating fishing into our waters.

Finally, good news

April was the best month in five-and-a-half years for sales of new cars and trucks in North Carolina.
Sales were 11.8 percent ahead of the same period last year—the best month for new car and truck sales since August 2007.
 “Vehicle sales are returning to pre-recession levels,” Robert Glaser, president of the North Carolina Automobile Dealers Association, said. “April was the best month since before the recession, and we are optimistic that sales will continue to grow over the next few months.”

Brunswick County Summer Concerts & Movies launch for season

Get ready for seasonal concerts at the beach and beyond.

Brunswick County’s free concert and movie series is set for the spring-into-summer season for 2013.

New this year is a Thursday series in Calabash, where concerts will take place on Thomasboro Road and movies shown in the town’s new Calabash Community Park at the corner of Persimmon Road and Traders Lane.

More of the series is in store in Ocean Isle Beach, Shallotte, Holden Beach, Sunset Beach, Leland and Southport.

Now we honor American men and women who have died in all wars.

Commissioners to give county employees pay raises

Commissioners chose a method to reclassify county jobs and institute pay increases, but the process won’t be finalized until the new fiscal year.

The county hired Evergreen Solutions in July 2012 to review compensation, job classifications, performance evaluations and benefits for all county employees.

The county received Evergreen’s initial recommendations in January and spent the past five months tailoring the plan.

Southport woman sues funeral home for losing ashes

A Southport woman has filed a lawsuit against a local funeral home.

The lawsuit was filed on May 20 at the Brunswick County Courthouse by Jennifer Dunn against Peacock Newnam Funeral Home, White Funeral Services, Gregory L. White, Delores H. White and Shawna Sanders.

Attorney Patrick Mincey of Wilmington is representing Dunn.

County board skips manager search, selects Hardy

Brunswick County commissioners called off their search for a new county manager Monday night.

Two weeks was all they needed to decide Ann Hardy is all they need.

Board members had just elevated the finance director to interim manager at the May 6 county meeting, after Hardy had served a month-and-a-half as special assistant to former county manager Marty Lawing to get up to speed on county needs before he left to be Guilford County’s manager.
