West Black sweeps Laney in doubleheader

 The West Black opened its Central Carolina Summer Scholastic League season by beating Laney in a doubleheader June 11 in Shallotte. Below are game summaries.

Carson Tew threw a two-hitter as the West Black opened its summer baseball season by beating Laney 3-1 in five innings in the first game of a doubleheader. Tew struck out four and walked none.

Thanks for making Sunset Beach stronger

To the editor:
Kudos to those Sunset Beach Town Council members who have worked so hard to take our little town to the next level.
Beginning early in the year with the landscaping around the Mannon C. Gore Bridge, there are many visible reminders of improvements that make our community even lovelier to live in and visit.
The improvements at the main public parking area are incredible and will be helpful to those using that lot. Adding a drop-off lane will improve safety and decrease the traffic back-up.

Sunset Beach police report

Sunset Beach police investigated the following incidents.

Larceny of four sets of golf clubs at Sandpiper Bay Golf Course, reported Monday, June 17. A perpetrator has been identified.

Breaking-and-entering of motor vehicle, larceny of pocketbook and injury to personal property (broken window) at the gazebo parking lot on June 13.

Larceny of weed eater and ladder on 37th Street, reported June 11.

Breaking-and-entering and larceny reported June 11 on Dogwood Drive.

Vereen Gardens celebrates 40th anniversary

Vereen Memorial Gardens in Little River, S.C., is celebrating its 40th anniversary, and you’re invited to the festivities.

The Vereen Gardens Anniversary is scheduled for 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, June 22, at the C.B. Berry Community and Historical Center, 2250 Highway 179 in Little River, just south of Calabash.

The fun will include a ceremony, guided nature walks, 

activities for children, educational sessions, music, a photo contest and concessions.

Volunteers are needed to assist in this free community celebration.

When my sister Anne Marie and I were kids, our parents gave us a printing press. It had wooden block letters we placed in slots and ink we poured into a container. After we arranged the letters into words, we hand-cranked paper over the blocks into a printed page.

Your editorial concerning those who have made the ultimate sacrifice was timely and appreciated by all veterans, The Beacon’s reputation as a strong supporter of veterans, veteran’s organizations and those currently serving is well documented.
As commander of Post 7288 Calabash VFW, I would be remiss if I did not clarify some comments in the article.

Buried Treasure

Holden Beach couldn’t have asked for a better person to discover an unexploded shell in the sand.

Gerald Workman, who unearthed a Civil War-era Parrott shell there April 8, knows all about munitions handling.

He spent 13 of his years in the Marines as a munitions expert and served in Kuwait during Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm making sure ammunition got where it was supposed to be.

“I’ve handled most (types of) ammunition as an explosives officer,” Workman said.

McKenzie hopes to emulate Napolitano at Wingate

 West Brunswick senior Trevor McKenzie, who has signed a letter of intent to play football at Wingate University, knows it is possible to blossom as a football player. West graduate Nick Napolitano is the example: He has worked his way to become a captain of the Wingate football team, excelling in academics and football.

From Batman pajamas to cap and gown, children grow up quickly

It seems like yesterday when I was begging to get a pair of Batman pajamas off my son Cameron just long enough to throw them in the laundry.

Now Cameron is a graduate of the class of 2013.

We have all heard the sayings, “don’t blink,” “time flies” and “they grow up before you know it.” Today I truly understand those words.

The afterschool staff and children would like to thank the many volunteers from Brunswick County agencies, businesses, veterans and community individuals who donated their time and talent this year.
We learned so much about the arts, health, gardening, cooking, camping, the life of authors, freedom for all, giving back through community service, respecting self and others, setting goals, kite flying, making ice cream, finance, preparing for the future through good grades, careers and more.
