Deputies to speak at Calabash meeting

Deputies with the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office are scheduled to speak at the Calabash town board of commissioners meeting Tuesday night.

The meeting starts at 7 p.m. May 14 at Calabash Town Hall on Persimmon Road.

Deputies will be on hand to answer questions from citizens about law enforcement in the town.

BCC graduates say farewell

Brunswick Community College celebrated its spring graduation ceremony last Friday.

Three hundred and twenty-five graduates received a total of 368 degrees, diplomas and certificates, and 180 students participated in commencement exercises.

“It was definitely a spirited group of graduates,” said Susanne Adams, Brunswick Community College president.

Brunswick sheriff has a new son

Brunswick County Sheriff John W. Ingram and his wife Michelle are parents of a newborn son.

The baby, named Tison, was born Monday, May 13, at Novant Health Brunswick Medical Center, Ingram’s dad, Billy, said Tuesday.

All are doing well, and the baby is “beautiful like his grandfather,” Billy Ingram said.

The new baby is Sheriff Ingram’s fourth son.

As we were en route to a lunch date with visiting friends, we passed a county vehicle emblazoned with this entreaty, “A reader today; a leader tomorrow.” Hmmm, I thought, a neat message for our youth. I tried to convey my impression to Hubby Dear. Traffic noise and the deeper concentration needed for travel through the rain made it impossible, so I let it go.

Gause pitches Walters State to World Series

Jay Gause was the winning pitcher as the Walters State Senators beat the Columbia State Chargers 6-0 Saturday afternoon in Morristown, Tenn., and earned a trip to the NJCAA Division I World Series in Grand Junction, Colo.

In the NJCAA East Central District Tournament championship game, Gause, a West  Brunswick graduate, struck out six, walked two and allowed five hits in the complete-game effort.

For the sixth time in program history, the Senators are heading to the World Series.

Burned building remains in Calabash

CALABASH—Remains of burned-out businesses on Carter Drive have yet to be removed because of insurance issues.

Building owner Marylyn Watson said Tuesday she is awaiting word from her insurance company to determine when the charred remains can be removed.

The 28-year-old building housing the 947 Bistro and Pub and three other businesses was destroyed by a fire that broke out in the early morning hours of March 18. Investigators determined the fire originated at the rear of the restaurant.

‘Iron Man 3’ brings acclaim to state’s film reputation

“Iron Man 3,” filmed 45 miles up the road in Wilmington, just took in the second-highest dollar figures ever for a movie’s opening.
The latest installment in the Iron Man series opened taking in a colossal $175.3 million, making it second only to 2012’s “The Avengers.” That movie was the predecessor in Marvel Studios’ ongoing series of superhero movies, which took in $207.4 million last year.

Cook throws 1-hitter in playoff victory

 The West Brunswick softball team beat Triton 2-0 Friday in Shallotte in a first round game of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Class 3A state playoffs.

West (15-6) will play at Nash Central (19-1) on Tuesday (too late for this edition).

Senior Kim Cook pitched a one-hitter. She walked two batters and hit a batter. She struck out seven.

The Trojans scored their winning runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Science Olympiad very impressive

I want to congratulate all participants of the first annual Science Olympiad for elementary school students of Brunswick County. The event was at Cedar Grove Elementary, and they were a most gracious host.
